This writer was startled to read in the Jan-Feb. newsletter from the social conservative World Council of Families in Rockford, Ill., that, of the “ten best trends” in the world in 2013, number one was “Russia Emerges as Pro-Family Leader.”
In 2013, the Kremlin imposed a ban on homosexual propaganda, a ban on abortion advertising, a ban on abortions after 12 weeks and a ban on sacrilegious insults to religious believers.
“While the other super-powers march to a pagan world-view,” writes WCF’s Allan Carlson, “Russia is defending Judeo-Christian values. During the Soviet era, Western communists flocked to Moscow. This year, World Congress of Families VII will be held in Moscow, Sept. 10-12.”
Will Vladimir Putin give the keynote?

Well Pat I got news for you in case you didn’t notice. Putin is the Devil in drag. Funny. All you have to do is put a halo on a guy and his mischief goes unnoticed.

This is hardly surprising. American religious conservatives will laud anyone, anywhere who will carry their water on the issues of abortion and gay rights. Prior to 9/11, American social conservatives sang the praises of various Islamic countries whose stances on abortion, contraception and gays mirrored their own. Recently many of them have praised the harsh anti-homosexual laws enacted in Uganda.
And over the years I’ve read many a comment from religious social conservatives that expressed envy towards those countries that had enforceable blasphemy laws on their books, unlike here. It’s sad that so many people believe the proclamations made by barbaric men who lived in a primitive age and time are nothing less than wisdom for the ages from a perfect deity. Because modern Christian, Islamic and Jewish fundamentalists have tied themselves to a worldview and a moral code that is dozens of centuries old, they bring the barbarism of that distant age into the modern world in the name of their god.
Slight correction – Jewish fundamentalist (there aren’t any actually) are no where near as nuts as the Christian and Islamic boys.
Jews have been interpreting the Torah for at least 2,000 year. Oh. They keep the law on the books. But enforce it? No way.
Take the death penalty. How to they get around it? Well 25 men of sound judgment (or some such number) have to have personally directly witnessed the crime. And testify to it. Evidence is no good (except as corroboration). Witnesses are REQUIRED.
The other fundies believe in no such implementing laws.
Jews gave up literal interpretation a long time ago. Not completely. But mostly.

Michael Savage continued to advocate that Christians join forces with “moderate” Muslims to battle secularism and Hollywood, referring to them as natural allies. I’ve not listened to him in 4 years, but he was still advocating such a union in 2010.

I belong to a Reform Congregation. Our Rabbi claims to be Orthodox. She is an LGBT advocate.
But America is not Israel. And not all Israeli Orthodox (as noted in the article) are in step with the crazies. Ban the Internet? Good luck.

Michael Savage quoted Pat Buchanan’s piece today, and in addition praised Putin as a modern day Constantine, savior of Christendom and Western values. Enough to gag you. The quote that got his attention:
The West’s capitulation to a sexual revolution of easy divorce, rampant promiscuity, pornography, homosexuality, feminism, abortion, same-sex marriage, euthanasia, assisted suicide — the displacement of Christian values by Hollywood values.
Emphasis on homosexuality.
I’ve listened for years to this midget who fancies himself a cultural Einstein. (Yes, a streak of masochism apparently.) Anyway, it doesn’t take a genius to read between the lines of his anti-gay rants to ferret out latent homosexuality. He likes to tell stories from his youth and the times he spent at a Bronx gym, all full of admiration for the svelte bodies of the gymnasts and the sweaty muscles of boxers and wrestlers. You could almost hear his heart racing as he described them as “those were realmen, not sissies like today.”

Re: Pat and the crazies. I’m always amazed at “Christians” who think nothing of having a “War on xyz”. It is an announcement loud and clear of “what we are selling people aren’t buying.”
With the discovery of endocannabinoids their war on pot is looking more evil every day. And the same or similar is happening with all their other culture wars.
The connection of PTSD with heroin use will kill that one in time.
They have a very fundamental problem, “if God made the universe and people why did he make them that way?” And if he made them “that” way why are you at war with HIS creation? There is no way to square that circle except with sophistry and evil intent.
I should note that Jesus was quite clear about divorce. “Christians” don’t seem to pay that one much attention.

Yes, I was doing some extended driving and the only two talk offering on the air was Savage and Terry Gross from “Fresh Air” on NPR. So I’d Listen to one until my head was close to explosive pressures, and then I’d reverse the polarity. I’ll say this, it will keep you awake driving at night…
