Cannabis Legalization Panics DEA Agent

Ah. Yes. There is a panic at the DEA. Where will all this lead? A loss of jobs is definitely in the works. Panic is probably in order.

The agent is being interrogated by Senator Grassley. You can’t make this shite up. Senator Chuck is a Republican. An 80 year old Republican. Well versed in Refer Madness no doubt.

The agent talks of failure. He fears failure. What he really means is that he and the hosts involved will lose their jobs. And there can be no greater failure than that. Given that he is not fit for productive work. He coulda been an engineer if only he had worked harder at math. I pity the poor fool. But not much.

Confirmation bias informs the world view of the typical drug warrior. This likely accounts for the despair displayed by this DEA member. For them, everything relating to drugs and usage is negative, end of story. It’s all they can see. They can only conceive of a world where legalization will make the world worse.

In the world of drug warrior confirmation bias, drug addiction proves the necessity of drug prohibition. The fact that most users of any drug never become addicts doesn’t factor into their calculations. When a person incurs injury or death from drug abuse or misuse, this again proves the necessity of drug prohibition. The fact that most drug use is generally benign for the vast majority of users is again ignored by the drug warrior. The confirmation bias goes so deep that drug warriors even use the societal ills incurred due to prohibition (ie. the violence from organized crime and the black market) as reasons to continue prohibition.

News stories and popular entertainment have done much to reinforce this confirmation bias.

The news media are duty bound to report drug law violations as matters of law breaking along with celebrity rehab reports, and other drug tragedies. When all news reporting about drugs and drug usage is negative, it is unsurprising that so many have supported drug prohibition for so long. The typically benign use of drugs that is experienced by most users isn’t news worthy so the news consumer is never presented with the other side. The benign use is hidden from the wider public because the user has to keep their usage secret in order to escape arrest. The fact that the average drug user is no more irrational or immoral than the millions of men and women that consume alcoholic beverages is rarely considered by drug warriors.

Books, TV shows, and movies have used the violence of the black market and drug use tragedies as dramatic devises in popular entertainment for decades now, reinforcing the confirmation bias of the drug warriors. The violent gangster or the tragic overdose provide dramatic tension for their stories. These dramatic stories are rarely counterbalanced with the reality of benign usage. There is no drama attached to the normal drug using experience for most drug users, which is to experience the effects of the drug, let them wear off, then go on about their business afterwards.

Lastly, drug warriors generally refuse to accept that enforcement of drug laws has had any negative effects. They aren’t troubled by the inordinately high arrest, parole, and incarceration rates as a result of the WOD as compared to the rest of the world. They don’t see how the drug laws have negatively affected policing in so many ways. The don’t see how the WOD has weakened constitutional protections. And the toll drug convictions and incarcerations have had on people, their families and their futures is also ignored by the drug warrior. Sadly, many drug warriors think these things are worth it to stop drug use.

My suggestion to all you drug warriors that are experiencing panic attacks due to the changing attitudes towards pot is to go out and smoke some. It will calm you down, and on the plus side you will see that it isn’t the evil inducing experience that you’ve been led to believe due to all the confirmation bias that informs your world.

    Randy,

Excellent. If you look up the the former enforcers at LEAP Law Enforcement Against Prohibition you will note that undercover cops are over represented. I believe that is because they were the cops most likely to come into contact with users in a using situation.
