Earlier on Facebook I linked what I thought would be a mildly interesting article:
“Fire-ant colony + molten aluminum = incredible art.”
The idea is that if you pour molten aluminum down into the ant colony and then dig out the casting, you will have an interesting art piece. Which you would, and which I, as someone who has done aluminum casting, can appreciate.
It didn’t occur to me that people would be upset by this, but they are. Sarah Hoyt rightly pointed out that the comments were nuts:
Some of the idiot comments on that article! Do people think it’s any better to believe that humans are uniquely bad, than that they are uniquely good? It’s not. It’s equally stupid. These people are going to drive me to screaming: Yes, other animals kill for pleasure and fun and because they haven’t even invented television let alone there isn’t anything good on the telly of a Saturday night. Also, please stop equating killing invasive ant species with killing humans. It proves nothing except that you froze at emotional age 12. ALSO yes, humans have the right to dispose of ant colonies that attack/annoy them. If I were an ant I might feel differently, but I’m human and I’ll stand with humans. This chic self-hatred makes me nauseous. I USED to have a fire ant colony in the yard in NC. I don’t think we have any here. Too bad. The crying over fire ants made me want to toast some.
Wow.
This made me look, and yes indeed, many of the comments are profoundly disturbing. I had not seen them, as I don’t like comments, and generally avoid them. But my initial reaction was that these people are crazy, and deeply decadent in the truest sense of the word.
This was HORRIBLE video! I feel incredibly hurt after watching it. What kind of human being does this to other living creatures? Imagine you are sitting in your home and someone sets fire to it just to watch what it might look like after. Horrible!!!

You are one sick, “pink skinned” motherf@cker! But, this is par for the course for you and the rest of your pink skinned lot….what you have done down through the centuries…a wanton disregard for other people and things in pursuit of anything that will amuse or profit you. Heil Hitler! I’m sure you’d have no problem with gas chambers, torture centers, slave labor camps, et al as long as it produced some form of art, amusement or return to you and others like you. I mean, how else would we have learned about how to do root canals painlessly without a few volunteers, just like these ants volunteered for your art work?

This is terrible. Anyone who thinks this is artistic needs to wake up. This is like nuking an entire city. Just because they don’t have a higher-form brain structure does not mean they don’t serve a purpose. Ants serve more of a purpose than most humans in the world do in the first place. If only people realized how simple of an idea or thought like this was, maybe we could be closer to a uniform peaceful society.
Those are just three out of hundreds.
Ants are about as lifelike as viruses. Yet for some reason they really seem to push an anthropomorphic (ANT-thropomorphic?) button in humans. Why? This guy offers an explanation.
I blame Aesop.
How representative the commenters might be, I do not know. Just because they are there does not necessarily mean they represent anyone save the authors. And even “they” might — because of the nature of anonymous comments — be a single determined animal rights activist, or a group of organized activists stalking the Internet.
My initial thought was “I bet they think abortion is a woman’s right!” They feel more sorry for ants (which are alive, but about as similar to humans as a virus) than humans. It has nothing to do with logic or morality, but it is more evidence that the AR people are malevolently anti-human. How long before someone who thinks like that designs a lethal virus?
Interestingly, if you go to the YouTube video itself, comments are disabled:
I understand why. There are a lot of psychotic ant lovers out there.
Perhaps they should be careful where they walk.

These are the kind of people that like to make “nice, nice” with bears.
A few of them every year get cured by Darwin.
Bears maybe I could understand. After all, they can walk on their hind legs sometimes, and are at least vaguely like humans with warm blood, eyes, noses, and teeth. Plus they do have cute cubs! But insects? What could be going on with these people? They are so insane, they actually made me defend Barack Obama.

Abortion is a woman’s right as the republicans gave themselves a post natal abortion 2012 when asked where in the bible does it say a fetus is a human being? In chronicles it says it is not!
Is cap just a bot?
To “captain*arizona”: The usual translation of Genesis 9:6 is “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” The Hebrew prefix usually translated as “by” also means “within” and the word translated by “man” means “human being.” IOW, we get “Whoso sheddeth the blood of a human being within a human being shall his/her blood be shed: for in the image of God made he humans.”
Question for animal rights wackos:
If you had a tapeworm would you
a)Have it killed
b)Have it removed and released into the wild -or-
c)Leave it where it is so it can have a warm, loving home?
Your immune systems kills literally billions of invading organisms every day. Cute, fluffy virii and bacteria with big brown eyes. Evil evil evil immune system.
By the time I saw the video, cool by the way, the comments had been blocked. I knew the reason was idiots posting crap like you’ve provided. Insane world. The only good fire ant is a dead fire ant. (From someone who grew up in the territory they invaded and has been on the receiving end of many of their bites). Do these idiots slap at mosquitos? Allow a wasps’ nest to remain attached to their house even if it’s right over an entrance where their kids or themselves would be stung? How about cockroaches? or sugar ants that invade homes by the thousands sometimes? Killing fire ants is a necessity down in the south because they will take over a yard or pasture in short order and they can kill the unfortunate victim with enough bites, especially if one happened to be allergic.
These are people who live in cities where they’ve never seen fire ants.
They only see cockroaches and rats, I’d like to see their opinions on killing that vermin.
I strongly suspect that all the bleeding hearts have never seen a fire ant, and definitely never been bitten by their ‘sneak on site and then bite in unison” habit (I have). I’ve done boiling water – I think molten aluminum is a GREAT idea.
You have to wonder about what those people would think about the people who make devices to caddyshack gophers.
Caddyshack made real:

Gopher problem, blow them up
Rodenator Pro, bunker buster

Rodenator Pro is the gopher and burrowing pest control device that is the coolest thing you have ever seen.
.
Yup, bears are “cute”.
“The Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while hiking.
They advise people to wear noise producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the bear unexpectedly. They also advise carrying pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity and know the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings.
Black bear droppings are smaller and contain berries and possibly squirrel fur.
Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray”
Fire ants? Not so much. Fire ants are the psycho-killer of the insect world. Their bites get infected and form a pustule that burns until you pop it.
These folks are the ones who grew up thinking that “Bambi” was a documentary.
SciFi author Kage Baker imagined a future world where “Beast Liberation” took hold–a world not too different from the one we see emerging right now.
