The Utopian View

Libertarians/liberals have a utopian view of foreign policy. Forgetting that the leadership of most countries could be compared unfavorably to outlaw motorcycle gangs.

    And we can include the USA too, right? After all, we have the highest per capita imprisonment rate in the Western world.

    My complaint with our foreign policy is that we use our economic and military might to cajole/coerce other nations to fall in line with our goals and objectives and then we are shocked and angered when these other nations react negatively to our coercion.

    I harken back to something the late Sen. Moynihan said about cornering a wild animal and then being surprised when the animal fights back once cornered.

    We do too much cornering then lament the fact that those we corner don’t appreciate being cornered.

    I completely agree with Simon, and both agree and disagree with Randy. I would love for the United States to throw its weight around less in matters that don’t concern us, especially when it has to do with other sovereign nations and their internal policies (i.e. Honduran presidential politics). But I would also like to see LESS delicacy when dealing with other sovereign nations regarding international issues that directly concern our national well-being.

    If I were POTUS, my foreign policy would be “Bombs, not boots.” I would stay out of stuff that’s not our business, but if somebody f*cked with us, it would be the last thing they ever do. No nation-building for me. (This is partly tongue-in-cheek, since I’m very glad to see the progress we made in Iraq, and highly irritated with Obama at his suandering of it and our gains in Afghanistan.)
