Why I Could Vote For A Lefty

I’m going to make some generalizations here so let us not get nitpicky. And each case is an event unto itself. But this is my general principle.

What does a lefty want? Your money. Your labor. Sometimes 95% or 99%. That has got to hurt. And it does. But give him the money he wants and he will leave you to your own devices. Sex it up? Booze it up? Drug it up? The lefty has no problem with that. In fact the lefty probably encourages that in order to get your mind off the theft.

What does the righty want? Your life. He wants you to live the “right” way and will watch you night and day to make sure you do. And should his minions catch you in “error”, you will be in it deep. Because you have violated not just man’s laws but God’s. And no punishment is too great for such a transgression.

That explains why I voted for the Communist in the 2004 Illinois Federal Senator election over the Theocon. And in that election there must have been a LOT of people thinking along similar lines. Obama/Keyes vs Kerry/Bush.

Of course C.S Lewis phrased it much better than I could ever hope to.

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. Clive Staples “CS” Lewis

I hope the Republicans take that into account when choosing a candidate. God (oh yeah) how I wish Palin was in. I think she gets the difference between living her own life the way she thinks best and putting government guns to people’s heads to make everybody live her way. The other top candidates seem unclear on the concept.

Sure, with leftists you can have all the sex and drugs you want.

    Booze? Not so much.
    Guns? Hell no.
Video Games? Not on your life.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt, helmet, armor.

And don’t you dare smoke that cigarette.

Neither party has a monopoly on state control. The fundamental difference between the Republicans and Democrats is what they want to control.

I just with the Libertarians would stop putting forth such fools for candidates. Run on the truth – Libertarians want to take over the government, and make it leave you alone!

I don’t except Lady Sarah from the rest of the pack of Republicans. Except for the Libs the whole pack wants me, a woman, to cover up, shut up, and breed.

    Jenny,

I’m counting on Todd to keep her in line. Uh. Maybe that is the wrong way to phrase it. 😉

Hardly, Jenny. They just want you to live by your or your family’s justly earned means.

    Brian,

So you are saying we have two statist parties? OK.

Simon – You mean it wasn’t blindingly obvious to you?

I don’t want a government that is proposing new programs and new laws. I want it shrinking.

So if someone runs for president on a platform of repealing laws, they’ll get my interest.

Of course it is obvious to me. I have been saying it for years.

That is a highly questionable premise. The definition of rape is being expanded to include drunken college sex, and the Obama administration has violated his campaign pledge to allow states to set their own marijuana policies.

“But give him the money he wants and he will leave you to your own devices.”

Absolutely, utterly, nightmarishly untrue. The lefty seeks to impose his own controls over you just as much as the righty does. The lefty may not wish to control what drugs you take or who you screw, but he does want to control what you say, what you eat, what you drive, how you light your house… the list goes on and on. Speech codes, bans on certain foods, laws controlling the products you buy, taxes used to shape social policy rather than to fund the government the list of lefty controls over your life is endless. All done for your own good, of course. The religious right-winger invokes God, and the left-winger will invoke the earth or the societal good as justification for his actions. Really, what the hell is the difference?

That explains why I voted for the Communist in the 2004 Illinois Federal Senator election over the Theocon.

Sorry, but nothing justifies a vote for Obama if you have any libertarian leanings at all. Given the “choice” between a theocrat (and granted, Keyes is one) and a communist (granted, Obama is one), I would have sat out the election. All you did was vote for someone who wants to control your life rather than vote for someone who wants to control your life.

The C.S Lewis quote you provide applies just as much to the left as the right. The particulars of of their tyranny might be different, but each seeks the same end: power to reshape your life.

    Robert Heinlein said it best:

“Political tags – such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth – are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.”

Understand: the lefty and the righty both want your life.

    Otto,

Short of shooting them you have to send a message some how. About 60% of the Republican voters in that election agreed with me. Well maybe only 55% (some did as you suggested and voted for some one else or no-voted that line).

Note how the Theocon wing of the R Party is muted some these days?

Leave you to your own devices? Have you forgotten the last hundred years of history?? Have you even merely forgotten the American Left of the last 50 years???

    pst314,

No. And I haven’t forgotten the statist right either.

Well, it surely seems like you have forgotten, or else you could not think a Communist to be preferable. The difference is one of orders of magnitude.

    pst314,

It is a personal thing. I hate with a purple passion Theocons.

And you know – it seems a lot of voters in Illinois share my passion (to a greater or lesser extent):

    Obama/Keyes vs Kerry/Bush

So maybe you don’t like reality. OK. Don’t deal with it. Eventually it will deal with you.

I have no objection to passionately hating theocrats of any sort.

But Commies are a much bigger threat.

So maybe I’m perfectly aware of reality.

    pst314,

You are aware of future reality. In the preset Theocrats lose elections.

Evidently the R party hasn’t fully embraced the message.

“If the Devil came out against Drug Prohibition I would make at least a favorable reference to the Devil in a post.”

    With apologies to Winston Churchill.
