What if fake conspiracy theories are manufactured (or enhanced) to cover the real conspiracies – because, you know, no one believes that stuff.
Can I claim a prize for the best conspiracy theory yet? Short version: most conspiracy theories are part of a bigger conspiracy to cover up the real conspiracies. Try sitting in a quiet place and thinking that through. I dare you. The place you wind up is called the Wilderness of Mirrors

After re-reading Eric’s post (the whole thing this time) it looks like some one else got there first. I think my phrasing is catchier.
And the Wilderness of Mirrors problem consumed James Jesus Angleton of the CIA, blinded him to the actual penetrations made by Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen, among others, and sent him off into a paranoid world from which he never really returned.
I’m not sure how anyone whose day job is counter-intelligence remains sane or attached to the real world. It’s one thing to be a professional cynic, as my profession demands, but to be a professional (and successfully functioning) paranoid is far beyond my ken.

What you are looking for to head counter intel is a high functioning super intelligent paranoid schizophrenic.
There are a few out there. A bit of amorality is required because it is crosses and double crosses all the way down. Fewer still.
A person like that is on the edge of madness already.
BTW the functioning schizophrenic is required because they see patterns with very little data. Of course the problem is seeing patterns from random data. Everything has to be checked.

This all makes me glad I’m just an unprofessional paranoid! My paranoia about being too paranoid keeps me in a state of constant paranoia….

I think the more usual problem in the current age is not being paranoid enough.
Which of course is something else to be paranoid of.
