Prayer To Satan To Start Public Meetings

Eric brought to my attention the emerging atheist-Scientologist-Satanist coalition. The premise is that the Supreme Court has allowed public bodies to use sectarian prayers to start public meetings. So I have invented a prayer for such occasions.

Oh Great Evil One protect us from those who wish to force us to do good.

Something similar to the agnostic’s prayer from Creatures of Light and Darkness by Roger Zelazny might be appropriate.

OTOH, you can make a case that any government prayer is Satanic.

    Joseph,

I was being totally ironic. Massive evil is mostly committed in the name of doing good. Alcohol Prohibition is a prime example. But we have numerous lesser examples.

So my petitioning for a reprieve from doing good is really asking to not be forced by government to do evil.

BTW I’m a great fan of Roger Zelazny as is co-blogger Dave.

    The Agnostic’s Prayer

Insofar as I may be heard by anything, which may or may not care what I say, I ask, if it matters, that you be forgiven for anything you may have done or failed to do which requires forgiveness. Conversely, if not forgiveness but something else may be required to ensure any possible benefit for which you may be eligible after the destruction of your body, I ask that this, whatever it may be, be granted or withheld, as the case may be, in such a manner as to insure your receiving said benefit. I ask this in my capacity as your elected intermediary between yourself and that which may not be yourself, but which may have an interest in the matter of your receiving as much as it is possible for you to receive of this thing, and which may in some way be influenced by this ceremony. Amen.

Reminds me of my favorite line from Constantine.

Angela: … I don’t believe in the devil.
John: You should. He believes in you.

The only thing worse than a crooked politician is a politician trying to do good.
