Please! Anyone but Newt!

While the latest poll news is being viewed mainly in the context of Herman Cain rising while Mitt Romney is falling, what worries me the most is the meteoric rise (I mean that in the sense of rising from nothing) of New Gingrich:

The man is poised to set himself up as the reasonable candidate. The “consensus” candidate. The man who has earned it by dint of his knowledge and experience (both of which are formidable). As I said not all that long ago,

I would absolutely not count Gingrich out. I think he is sitting in the background positioning himself as a very articulate alternative to both Romney and Perry. Looking ahead, I think that as the red meaters coalesce around Perry (which they will as the other anti-Romneys drop out)), Romney and Perry will end up in a huge slugfest, and the uglier it gets, the more Newt will benefit. Like McCain, Newt can lurk in the background with his heavy DC creds and the ability to always sound like some voice of common sense.

Ugh.

While I think he makes the rest of the pack look good, many Americans might start thinking that the rest of the pack make him look good. And I worry that if he keeps refusing to make mistakes, he may win by default.

That I see him as the ultimate anti-libertarian is irrelevant.

Hell, it might even help him….

I should really just shut up.

No, seriously. I should shut up right now, lest I find myself in the disgusting position of having to vote for him, just to defeat Obama.

I don’t want to live with such burdens.

Eric, don’t despair. The problem with Gingrich, as with a lot of Bible pounding bigots, is that they are just hypocrites.

Here’s the real Gingrich responding to a question about gays teaching in public schools:

L: Well, my thinking was something like that if people are homosexuals, that tells us something about their character and we care about the character —-

    G: I don’t agree with that.

L: Oh, I see. Why do you think God calls it an abomination if it says nothing about their character?

G: I think there are many good and kind and decent people who may also be homosexuals.

    L: Really?

    G: Yes.

    L. My goodness.

G: And you live in a very narrow world if you’ve never met one.

I hate to admit it but if it’s Romney nor Newt, I go with Newt every time.

I didn’t dislike Perry until I started learning about him.

I don’t know what Cain’s deal is. On the one hand, he has a fairly impressive resume.
On the other, he keeps saying stupid shit.

Backmann is a no go. As is Romney. The first because she has no chance, the second because he’s a lying sack of crap whose principles, the ones he acts on not the ones he claims to have (today), don’t appear to be all that far from Obama’s. He would not roll back all the crap Obama has done in the last few years.

I’m rooting for a good Congress and just hoping the pres rescinds all the executive orders Obama’s used to strangle us with regulations.

Plus, I have a soft spot for Newt from the 90s.

Veeshir, the quote wasn’t meant as an endorsement for chrissake!

Veeshir, substitute the word “adulterers” for “homosexuals” in the Gingrich quote above, and you will get my point.

Ah, the old horse race. I still think that if a non-Tea-Party-ish candidate (i.e. Romney, Newt) gets the nod, we will see a third party candidacy. But after awhile I get tired of all this vacuous speculation.

    Vote for Obama.

A couple of possibly relevant points…

Newt’s sister Candace is a lesbian.

And Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips endorsed Gingrich:

Frank, I didn’t think you were, my comment was directed toward the post not your comment.

I still think I’m more for Perry than anybody else in the race, but Newt’s not the last, that’s Romney.

I will never vote for Romney. Not ever. I would vote for Newt or Perry even as I dislike them.
If it’s Romney, my plan is to write in Gus Hall.
