The Competition Heats Up

Via The Volokh Conspiracy’s – The GOP’s Pot Problem I came across this bit from National Review – Taking Back the Joint.

If the GOP is going to be competitive in 2016, it has to communicate to young people that intrusive federal government makes their lives worse. It has to communicate that it’s the party that respects personal choice and individual responsibility. And it would probably help to communicate that when in doubt, the GOP doesn’t automatically take the side of the insanely expensive branch of the federal government that breaks into people’s homes, shoots their dogs, and imprisons them because they added a funny ingredient to their brownies.

Adler from Volokh adds:

Instead, as I’ve noted before, this issue is also an opportunity for Republicans to demonstrate a commitment to conservative principle and abandon its fair weather federalism. Alas, I’m not holding my breath.

He should if he has recently inhaled.

Now in keeping with the theme Eric set this morning and the topic of this post perhaps you should have a look at Better Than Viagra which Gave Me Hope.

Update: 18 Nov 2012 1643z

The comment section at Breaking The Taboo – What Will It Take To End The War On Drugs? has a number of Republicans who don’t like Republican policy on the issue. Including yours truly. One of them (other than me) voted Libertarian in the last election.

Let me add that a Social Conservative asked me what Social Conservatism will do if tbe Party no longer favors punishing sinners? Well you could give up the punishment regime and focus on fiscal matters. And note: I differentiate sin from crime. Sin is what you do to yourself that is harmful to you. Crime is what you do to others. All crime is a sin. Not all sins are crimes. Except under the American Taliban.

And I reiterate: Don’t Bogart That Joint”

P.S. and I agree: All crime is a sin. Not all sins are crimes. Except under the American Taliban.

(P.S. – much as I love that song, pot makes me sneeze/cough/hack, etc. (funny brownies are ok, as is tea – but still not really my thing.) Not a fan; except that well… it’s silly to outlaw it just because I don’t want it?)
