I realize Michigan does not speak for the nation, but I thought this poll was interesting enough to share.
Romney not only beats Obama by a sizable margin here, while Gingrich loses by a sizable margin. Moreover, if you look at the breakdowns (whether by party affiliation/non-affiliation, age, sex, race, positions on abortion, whatever), there exists not a single group in which Gingrich bests Romney. The biggest spread is among independents, who dislike Gingrich by a large margin. However, the problem Romney faces is that unlike Gingrich, he has a huge problem with a very loud and angry faction of Republicans. Considering the number of Republicans who absolutely will not vote for Romney even if he is the candidate, (some of whom literally consider him “Satanic”) it is no exaggeration to describe this as hate.
So Gingrich is hated by more Americans, while Romney is hated by more Republicans.
I guess party versus country is a tough equation to solve.
MORE: The Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes makes this observation:
“Months ago, Gingrich foresaw his emergence as the chief rival to Romney. No one else did.”
Ahem.

Look, Eric, my older son says he has trouble considering voting for Gingrich. He would rather vote for Zombie Hitler on a platform of “Heil, Brainz” (since this was said while I was driving, I almost swerved off the road laughing. He did the accent. :)) I suppose Zombie Hitler is as bad as Satan?
You can put me in the Satan camp.
Of course, most die hard republicans tagged me as a heathen apostate once I decided Ron Paul was the best choice in 2012.
I won’t vote for robot Romney, the hypocritical gas bag Gingrich or that moronic Cain.
As a Texan, we don’t get much say on who the GOP nominee is with our late season primary. Which kind of blows.
Whether it is Newt Romney or Mitt Gingrich, all I can do is hold my nose and vote.
And I guess complain.
If this was a poll of just-Michigan residents, there may be another explanation for Romney.
That is, his father (George Romney) was a popular governor in Michigan from 1963 to 1969.
In other news, it looks like Obama isn’t as popular (in Michigan) as he was 4 years ago.
And Michigan’s electoral college votes have gone to Dems (Clinton, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama) in the last five Presidential elections.
…to continue my last comment, it looks like Michigan may be up for grabs in 2012, by this poll.
It is interesting to see that under-50s are more inclined to go for Obama than the over-50s. Libs painted the Tea Part as a bunch of old fogies, yet in this poll the old fogies are more likely to go for Obama.
Personally, I go for ABO: anyone but Obama, or if Hillary runs, ABD.
How about a Satan/Santorum ticket. Satan will bring in the libertine vote while Santorum can get the Pharisee vote.
More Americans prefer Satan
Wait, Dick Cheney is running?
