AOS FTW on MJ in NJ

Over at Ace of Spades, re medical marijuana being legalized in New Jersey:

As I wrote I just no longer have any interest in using the coercive power of the state to impose my personal preferences on recreational drug use on anyone else.

Well said.

I think this sort of law winds up undermining respect for the law. It breeds cynicism.

More and more conservatives seem to be coming to similar conclusions.

It’s like in the military they know to not give an order you know won’t be obeyed.

It breeds contempt for all orders.

But all these laws appear to be meant, by the people who actually vote on them, as a means to get more control.

The more laws there are the more law-breakers there are.
Most people break multiple laws a day without even knowing it.

Nice post, and Veeshir, you’re right. The best way to boost crime is to criminalize more things that people do. You’d think more economists would point that out.

Prohibition did much to create a lawless America, but what really did the trick in rolling it back was simple economics. The Depression had set in and the government wanted alcohol revenue.

I think I would insert injustice into the equation, prior to cynicism.

We have unjust laws just about everywhere you turn. It runs the gamut of unjust criminal laws to unjust business and labor regulations, and on and on. The fix is in if you are in the right group, union, corporation, class, etc. As new unjust laws compound the old unjust laws, more and more people are affected and these same people see the corruption.

    The cynicism ensues from there.
