We – The Deserving

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Prompted by a report of this incident: Tased Motorist to CBP Agent: ‘What the Fuck Is Wrong With You?’. Here, from the report, is a report on a citizen with it so deep in his throat it is a wonder he can speak.

Even though she was preparing for a career as a CBP [Customs and Border Protection] agent, Cooke clearly was disturbed by this development. But the Watertown Daily Times found some local residents who think her objections are much ado about nothing. “I’m all for border patrol checks,” said one. “Look at the drugs seized weekly by these that would otherwise go right onto the streets. If you have nothing to hide, why be a jerk? Just cooperate.”

That is some real humor – the tased motorist was studying to be a Border Patrol Agent.

But we don’t have to go so far as Watertown to find that kind of opinion. It comes up in our comments. The gentleman in question wants order. I wonder if he has considered prison. Lots of order in prison. Most of the time.

And he likes the idea of Prohibition. Any kind of Prohibition. Prohibition of Murder, Prohibition of Drugs. What is the difference? Because me murdering some one else is exactly the same as me consuming (unapproved) plant matter. The government needs Power and Control so it can impose Order. We should all be grateful. Limited Government!

We are fortunate to live in a time and place where we do not have to start with shooting (although the shooting has started). I’m encouraged that we have a lively comment section. Maybe we can talk this down before it comes to mass murder.

Update: 17 May 2015 0629z

It appears the border patrol has made a visit to Ms Cooke’s residence. No doubt they were interested in discussing the finer details of her videography and the shit storm it has created.

You know if I was a betting man I’d bet she has no future with the border patrol.

And you might even show our newfound anti-zoning allies a little understanding, because being a principled libertarian, as opposed to being one of “convenience,” is hard. It really is. You must first develop a genuine tolerance for every stupid or distasteful or downright immoral thing other people might choose to do with their lives, and then spend the rest of your life nurturing that tolerance. The all-too-human itch to tell other people what to do is nearly irresistible to scratch — as is evidenced by the near-entirety of human history.

For a brief, shining moment, the United States ran counter to that history — but even that moment was tainted by the evils of slavery in the South, and by legally-enforced sexism almost everywhere else. The solution was to expand what I jokingly call “White Man Liberty” to all sexes and all colors, but instead Washington and the states are now in the business of putting new shackles on everybody, everywhere.

It was Progressives like Yglesias, starting over a century ago, who connived us into throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

    Thanks for this post, Simon,

    It looks like it’s not only the Progressive Left that needs to understand that;

Every tax, [every law,] every regulation comes with it an army of bureaucrats and behind that an army (with guns) of enforcers.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

but the supposedly ‘Law And Order’ Right as well.

    c andrew,

It is meant to be passed around. Without attribution is fine by me. I especially like leaving it at anti-Prohibitionist sites where leftists congregate.

They HATE prohibition. I’m working on getting them to generalize. With some effect.

Why didn’t the jews charge the machine guns when they saw what was happening? Read beyond freedom and dignity by b.f. skinner and you will understand.

hey zonetard, is this rhetorical, or have you really read it yourself. I mean really read, y’know, look at and understand every word on the page, in sequence, page by page, start to finish. If yes, I’m frankly surprised you know how to read. So, try reading something else than a thoroughly discredited jerk. If no, try pecking at the crumbs until the bell rings. That explains your typing style and spelling, just spread some crumbs on the keyboard and peck them.

The Warsaw ghetto held out against the nazis for two weeks with a total of only about 10 guns, which included single-shot target pistols pea shooters. Imagine if they’d had some real fire power.
