26 de Julio?

Shit! Did I just forget* the magnificent anniversary of the sainted Cuban Revolution?

Nah, fuck em!

Or whatever.

* I really don’t think I have actually forgotten in the true (either the Orwellian or modern silly honest) sense, because it’s only 11:00 p.m here in Berkeley.

MORE: I’m still on the road in my head but this is better than the above:

So is this:

I wonder how different modern history would have been if we had sent in the marines in 1960? (English subjunctives are awkward…)

It’s people like Castro and Che that make me wish there was a Hell just so they could burn in it.

Next question: Why does communism seem to be attractive to Latinos? They keep electing leftist governments even when they already know what they’re going to get. Hugo Chavez was elected a couple years after leading a failed coup. Nicaragua reelected the Sandinistas. And so on. And it never works, they are continuously mired in poverty and misery.

There are theories that language determines what people can think and that mainly determines the type of society. (Sapir-Whorf, the essay in 1984 on Newspeak, Languages of Pao, Jack Vance etc.)

By this theory the reason Mexico and most of S. America are such failures is that they speak Spanish. So, conquer Mexico and force them to speak English. (Anybody doubt that all of Mexico would be better off if we’d taken the entire thing in the Mex-Amercan war? Or maybe not, we only stole that part with all the paved roads)) Presto! Instant liberal democracy, no more illegal immigrants. Shoulda done that to Afghaniraq while we had the chance.

The standard line is that Castro vastly improved health care compared to what went before. Such as life expectancy in Cuba currently being 5 years greater than life expectancy in Latin America.

Ask a PSF [Pendejo sin Fronteras]: would you say that life expectancy in Cuba currently being 5 years greater than life expectancy in Latin America shows that Castro has been a good steward for Cuba, and that overall Castro has done a good job?

    PSF: Yes.

Q: Would you say that life expectancy in Cuba in the 1950s being 8 years greater than life expectancy in Latin America shows that Batista had been a good steward for Cuba, and that overall Batista had done a good job?

    PSF: Crickets.

Of course, Batista had nothing to do with Cuba having more MDs per capita than many European countries- that was already in place when he took power in the coup in the 1950s.
