A good question, to be sure. But isn’t it a sexist one?
Women across the city are having similar conversations with themselves lately, as Philadelphia reels from yet another senseless purse snatching/homicide. The latest happened early Sunday as two women left the Tropical Heat nightclub at 53rd and Market streets following a night of karaoke. Two men in hooded sweatshirts confronted the women about 2:35 a.m., took their handbags, then opened fire, killing Melissa Thomas, 29, and injuring her friend.
All because of a damn handbag.
“She gave it up and she still was killed,” said Sanchez, 40, an administrative assistant. “It’s 2:40 in the morning. She’s just coming out of the bar. At 2-something in the morning, they probably didn’t have that much cash on them.
“Where are our men? Why are they not protecting us?” Sanchez continued, her voice full of frustration. “Men are failing us. I feel as though we are not being protected.”
No doubt they aren’t being protected. But do men have the duty to protect women? Think about it. Men either do, or they do not. The sexes are either equal or they are not. If they are equal, then why don’t men who are attacked and robbed have just as much of a right to complain, “Where are our women? Why are they not protecting us?”
You think that’s funny? You think I am being sarcastic?
I am being deadly serious. Women are now being treated as the legal equivalent of men in combat units, even in the Marine Corps, are they not?
Whether the latter is a good idea or not, sooner or later these contradictory double standards need to be addressed.

It was usual in times past if a woman wanted to be protected by a man – she married one.
And then women got the idea that they needed a man like a fish needed a bicycle. Maybe the woman should have roared. Or at least been packing heat.
Well, it’s the world they wanted. I hope they like it.
They are being preyed on by black men. They are asking for protection from men of their own race.
I am amazed by how feminocentric this is: “Why aren’t men protecting US (ME)?” and how oblivious the author is to that point and its gender narcissism. To paraphrase Instapundit’s bullet point: Fish bemoans loss of bicycle!
She should get a dog to protect her. Then she can spend all day beating it with sticks, never feeding it and just generally treating it like shit.
Then she can bemoan what useless, rotten animals dogs are.
guy,
I see you have had sufficient interactions with the female of the species homo sapiens.
Fred Reed takes Eric’s rant to it’s source, which is the absurdity of our democracy. From women as combat Marines to future engineers counting on their fingers, he lets it rip.
