“worn and not visible”

The Little Rock, Arkansas public school district is about to require teachers to wear underwear:

The school district in Little Rock, Ark. has announced plans for a dress code that will require teachers to wear underwear.

Every single day. Female teachers will have to wear bras, too.

An Aug. 29 letter from the Little Rock School District’s Office of the Superintendent to all employees explains that the dress code will officially go into effect in the fall of 2014.

“Foundational garments shall be worn and not visible with respect to color, style, and/or fabric,” the letter reads. “No see-through or sheer clothing shall be allowed, and no skin shall be visible between pants/trousers, skirts, and shirts/blouses at any time.”

Then there’s this:

Organized labor vocally opposes the new universal underwear requirement and the rest of the non-draconian dress code.

I never knew that underwear was a union issue, but I learn something every day.

And I learned about the underwear flap from Doug Mataconis, who commented drolly,

I am most interested in wondering exactly how they will ensure compliance with this policy.

I suppose they can order teachers to pull up their skirts or drop their pants for the officially designated underwear inspector, but the whole thing strikes me as sort of odd. How did this become a problem requiring a rule? How would anyone know whether teachers were wearing underwear or not? Did someone complain?

I suspect there’s some missing subtext somewhere.

“Underwear will be worn on the outside, so we can check”.

Sounds to me like a policy aimed at one employee.

I think the root of the matter is explained by the phrase “No see-through or sheer clothing”.

Somebody’s lack of underwear was a little too obvious.
