Here is the Libertarian Party response.
I worry about the Libertarian plan to shrink America’s involvement in the world. That was tried in the 1930s and we got the 1940s in response. And what else did we get in the 40s? Government took over the economy. Other than that I do believe Libertarians have a point.
Medical Marijuana prohibition is a crime against humanity and a violation of the religious precept – heal the sick.
Pass it on.

The U.S.wasn’t isolationist in the 30’s. We had military interventions in the Philippines, Latin America, and China. We just stayed out of Europe.
Not sure I agree with your point about our non-involvement in world affairs during the ’30s leading to WW II either. Besides what Bram has pointed out, a slightly longer view suggests that our involvement in WW I and post-war events played a major role in what happened in the ’40s.
My own personal theory is that Wilson’s injection of the U.S. into WW I, when both sides had laid waste a whole generation and fought themselves to a standstill, allowed Britan and France to force Germany into signing the disasterous Treaty of Versailles rather than reach a more equitable solution.
I’m not a big fan of what-if history, but I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to argue that without the crushing economic burdens placed on Germany by the treaty, as well as other onerous requirements, the German people would not have been so keen on Hitler’s message.
I’ve over simplified the argument for ease of posting.
What Brian and Rick said.
I’m not sure that even European “involvement” in the 30s would have stopped WW2.
The only thing that might have was a very militarized America making a credible promise of immediate mobilization and invasion in the face of a European War.
And that would have been tremendously expensive – and relied on Germany taking us at our word.
The “West” had gone pacifist. Lost cohesion. Demilitarization was all the rage. It wasn’t just what was done or not done. It was the general attitude.
Hitler said something to the effect, “They are worms.” Soft. Ripe for the picking.
Hitler himself said that military opposition to the Rhineland take over would have put him out of business. Estimated cost? About a company of dead. That amounts to about 200 dead.
But no one wanted war. Except the Fascists.
Remind you of Libertarian positions on anything?
BTW Islam mainly allied with Hitler during WW2. Read up on the Teheran Conference security issues. Or the history of the Muslim Brotherhood during WW2. Or the history of Churchill in the 30s. “Mein Kampf” is still a best seller in Arabia.
Rand Paul’s speech on Islam was good. Enough? Remains to be seen.
The Libertarians know nothing of military logistics. Closing bases is probably the stupidest idea they have.
Ah. Well. If they want to encourage a WW that bad they will have one.
Islam is a warrior culture.
You don’t check such a culture by talking peace in our time. You check it by “If you twitch wrong we are going to stomp your ass. Best to stop twitching. NOW! MOTHERFUCKERS.”
And then stomp some ass every now and then just for the “fun” of it.
That is how you keep the greater peace. Yeah. It stinks. But it is how humans work. At least until everyone in the world is a Libertarian.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to be feared.
Anyway – the above is the only bone I have to pick with the Libertarians. Otherwise their ideas are sound.
America is broke. Borrowing 40% for every dollar spent is killing us. We’ll become isolationist whether we want to or not. Economics will force the issue. Best to deal with it now in a controlled manner.
Hah! That will never happen. We’ll just keep spending ourselves into oblivion. Then we won’t even be able to defend the lower 48. Let alone police the world.
NB: Besides I thought the argument for open borders was that we can’t close them. Too big. So how can we defend the world if we can’t defend our own borders?
l.i.b.,
The trouble with that theory is that if the war goes full on hot the money will be found. Just as it was post 7 Dec ’41.
But the costs will be much higher than if we had spent it up front.
BTW your theory is similar to the one held by about 1/2 the US citizens in the ’30s. It has been tried. Guess we will be trying it again.
