Cut the worship already

As I sit here waiting for the presidential debate to start, I have a couple of questions.

1. Why is the presidential debate is being held on the Obamas’ 20th wedding anniversary? Coincidence? Or is the idea to give him an added sympathy edge?

2. And why should a presidential campaign speech be allowed to effectively shut down a major university campus as happened at the University of Wisconsin?

I don’t believe in worshiping presidents, and I have never worshiped one in my life. The fawning adulation surrounding this man is appalling. It would be one thing if he had a record of solid accomplishment, but I can’t name one. (Obamacare is the opposite of an accomplishment, as are a lot of things the man has done….)

MORE: I watched the debate, and I think Romney had Obama on the ropes. Hope he keeps it up.

MORE: The CNN gang seems amazed that Romney did so well. Maybe they think (via too much Bush conflation) that he’s some sort of idiot, and that Obama didn’t need to worry. Right now (at 10:45 p.m.)  they’re sounding very disappointed.

No one on either side should succumb to feeling smug about this.

The only poll that counts is the one on November 6.

You’ve got a stronger stomach than I do. I bailed out in less than 10 minutes.

“It would be one thing if he had a record of solid accomplishment, but I can’t name one.”

No, actually it wouldn’t. There are hundreds of people I respect more than Barack Obama (hell, if you count the ones whose names I don’t know, there are billions of them), but that’s not the point. The level of adulation and deference he gets is not appropriate for _any human being_, no matter how genuinely great that human being might be. Not even if he’s somehow Jon Postel, Norman Borlaug, and the Pope all rolled into one.

Compared to the sheer idolatry of treating any mere mortal as Barack Obama is treated, the fact that he as a specific individual is an ineffectual lightweight or even an enemy of all that’s good and right and true fades into insignificance.

Thanks for watching it so I didn’t have to. I was busy designing.

The designing was caused by the first mate and a friend goading me.

    Your support has been invaluable.
