I’m against a carbon tax, because it’ll get politicians used to taxing energy. Once they set the system up to be dependent on energy taxes, they’ll find a way to tax it even if petroleum use declines. Solar, hydro, whatever–they’ll tax it.
Just look at the GPS-enabled “mileage tax” being considered so that Prius drivers pay “their fair share” of road upkeep.

Such a new tax, without exemptions, incentives, and credits would probably destroy the party that passed it. OTOH with the right exemptions, incentives and credits; it could raise a lot of campaign contributions.
