The End Of A Nuclear Era

The USS Enterprise is undergoing its final deployment. It makes me sad. That will be the end of the last vestige of the only nuclear powered task force ever. I was part of that task force as an RO on DLG(N)25 – The Bainbridge. Yankee station in the South China Sea. The Bainbridge and the nuclear cruiser Long Beach have long since been cut up for scrap. The Enterprise is the last nuclear ship of that task force to go. I’m hoping for a new Fusion Powered Enterprise. Soon. Please.

Way too many years ago, as a student, the consensus was that fusion was “just around the corner.” In the -something more than 20 years- since then, they have abandoned all those lines of research. And now we are told that fusion is “just around the corner.”

The real truth is things like the missiles being developed and deployed by China is going to turn big ships back into targets.

I know you still need a way to transport “boots” to the “ground” you need them to occupy, but a lot things are going to be handled by unmanned drones. (They are cheaper, the human body is a design constraint on how fast you can turn, etc.)

Stealth may change some of that equation, but not all of it.

Of course scrapping the ship is never included in budgeting its lifetime costs.

    Deb,

Evidently you are unfamiliar with the Navy’s funding of Polywell.
