The Real Enemy

My friend Eric alerted me to a boycott of CPAC by Conservative Groups over the inclusion of a gay group at the CPAC convention.
Don’t they know that the real enemy is the Andromeda Galaxy? They are sending viruses to destroy us. I saw it in a movieonce. We need to unite behind the real enemy. Andromeda. And if not Andromeda, at least can the Republicans unite against the Democrats? Far too much to hope for I guess.

Ronald Reagan would have attended CPAC, if his record toward gays is any indication. From an article in Newsweek by Andrew Romano, July 9, 2010:
In 1967, Governor Reagan signed a law in California that legalized millions of abortions. In 1978, he opposed California’s Proposition 6 ballot initiative, which would’ve barred gay men and women from working in public schools. As president, he was perfectly willing to anger Jerry Falwell and the religious right by choosing a Supreme Court nominee, Sandra Day O’Connor, whose pro-life credentials were in doubt; he simply cared more about appointing a woman. When he addressed right-to-life rallies, it was always remotely, by video. He even became the first president to host an openly gay couple overnight at the White House.
And from The National Catholic Reporter (a site I read religiously, flenser) an article by Michael Sean Winters January 21, 2011:

For example, Reagan did not have a bigoted bone in his body and, working in Hollywood for many years, homosexuality was not for him the kind of barn-burning issue it was for social conservatives. As Governor of California, he resisted having to fire an aide who was brought down by his intra-staff opponents because he was gay.
And finally, in answer to the fact that someone like Reagan wasn’t homophobic, the social conservatives have gone full tilt, actually accusing Ronald Reagan of being queer. Here it is from:

    From commenter AKAT, January 24:
How did you like the disclosure from Bob Chapman about his gayness? It really shocked Alex (Jones) to the point of being speechless for a while. It was pretty well known in California. In the day and age he was in movies you had to be either highly talented as an actor or bi to get work. Yup, he was a whore-ible in many ways.
Social conservatives have a REAL problem, and it’s their inability to deal with sex.
They might as well be living in the 17th Century, because their ideas haven’t progressed beyond it, to the point that they are historically revising President Reagan as gay.
As Sarah Palin would say, WTF?

Does it often seem that many American politicians and pundits are talking past each other? That is because they really are. The frustrating nature of public debate arises in large part from the fact that Americans do not share a single worldview.
A worldview is a more or less coherent understanding of the nature of reality, which permits its holders to interpret new information in light of their preconceptions. Clashes among worldviews cannot be ended by a simple appeal to facts. Even if rival sides agree on the facts, people may disagree on conclusions because of their different premises.
Both the conservative and liberal camps include people with different and sometimes incompatible worldviews. American public debate is arguably dominated by five significant political worldviews: neoliberal globalism, social democratic liberalism, populist nationalism, libertarian isolationism and Green Malthusianism.

as a small l libertarian with a close friend who is a social conservative, I’m here to say we CAN all get along. It just takes neither wanting to legislate saving the other and BOTH seeing the dangers of statism.
    Um… maybe I should write a post about that…
