Nice boys wear leather?

An animal rights activist gathering signatures wore a T-shirt that caught my eye.
I asked a friend what on earth could be meant by the phrase “NICE GIRLS FAKE IT,” and a spirited discussion ensued, as the word “nice” is subject to many interpretations — especially in the context of sexual sincerity.
Of course, we assumed that the word “fake” involved orgasms.
On closer examination, it’s obvious that it has to do with fur.

“Real fur hurts animals” is the smaller caption. (Shirt for sale here.)
Nothing sexual about it.
Well, at least they’re logical, and not condemning leather!
I’d hate to have to give that up to be nice.

    (Rummages through bumper-sticker collection)
“People are more violently opposed to fur than leather, because it’s safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs.”
Anyway, if fur hurts animals, isn’t removing it from them the humane thing to do?

I’m reminded of an erstwhile band from Boone, NC, calling itself “Snatches of Pink.” When called on it, the members would smirk and say the name had nothing to do with sex, and that the person noticing its prurient nature was the one with a dirty mind.
I called bull on that and in this case. The shirt writers know exactly what they are implying.
What I don’t understand is what such liars get out of this.

My bad! The band is not erstwhile.

I was once having lunch at McDonald’s in downtown Berkeley with a woman who is very active in local politics. As we were eating, she suddendly said: “Oh my God!” and covered the side of her face facing the street. I asked her “What happened?” She said “Someone just walked by wearing a coat with a fur collar!” I laughed and she asked me why. I said: “Where do you suppose McDonald’s got the beef to make the Big Mac you are eating right now? From cows that volunteered?” She said she didn’t understand my question, so I dropped it.

I don’t walk around with “dirty” thoughts, but the message did seem calculated to invite attention.

C, meat comes from stores, not cows!
Eric, you’re right that the anti-fur campaign is made much easier by the fact that most men don’t wear fur.

Interesting that you didn’t mention what the activist was gathering signatures for….or that you didn’t come up and introduce yourselves to us since we have been the subject of your blog.

I didn’t especially want to draw attention to your cause, because I do not agree with you, although I noticed your group’s victory in today’s Inquirer. Now that the elephants are to be removed, I’m just hoping you’ll leave the Philadelphia Zoo alone.
If not, I’m sure I’ll continue to complain.

Hey Eric! If you signed our petition to help get Dulary to be retired to the Elephant Sanc in Tess I want to personally thank you! The Zoo announced just yesterday this wondeful news. Maybe it was YOUR last signature that convinced the Zoo to do the right thing! If so, great job…Kudos to you, Eric! If you ever want to borrow my T-shirt, let me know as you seem to work wonders for the animals! Signed, a “nice girl”

Thanks for visiting, but I can’t bring myself to agree with the ultimate goals of the animal rights movement. I called attention to the T-shirt because it did catch my eye, and it made me think about what the slogan says indirectly as well as directly.
If fur hurts animals, then by the same logic, why doesn’t leather? I suspect that’s the unstated message, and I disagree.

I did pick that up, the fact that you did not agree with the AR movement. Anyone concerned with animal suffering, the T-Shirt might as well say, Zoos, Circuses, Rodeos, Pet Stores, Sea World, leather, food production, medical research, etc….it all hurts animals. So, yes, leather hurts too is unstated. I too like what the T-Shirt says directly as inderectly so at least we agree on this and can hopefully just “agree to disagree” on all else. If I ever run into you again, please let me know. I’d be happy to pose and smile for the camera. 🙂

Eric, Jimmy the hippo is next…just to hear you cry like a baby.

I’ll do almost anything to get blog traffic. (Including crying over a dead hippo, I suppose.)
    Get to work!
