The Essential Taoist

Inspired by a discussion with a commenter at Did I impose on PETA last night?

Being left alone is not an imposition.

If I push on a block of wood I am imposing on it. If I don't push on the block I'm also imposing on it? You must be a Taoist.

I'd say the Jews imposed on Hitler by wanting to be left alone, but Godwin would never forgive me.

Perhaps the purpose of the existence of the block of wood is to be pushed on by you. By withholding your push, you are denying it the fundamental essence of its individual existence.

Yes, of course inaction is itself action. One does not have to "be" a Daoist to understand the principle of wu wei.

You seem a bit hung up on the word "imposition". You seem to think "to impose" implies a normative statement. But it does not. Imposition is neutral. You might impose on someone's hospitality. Or you might impose agapic love on them.

Dude if you start loving me I'm calling the cops. There are certain impositions I will not stand for. You are one of them.

OK. You are probably right about the block of wood. But that makes me right too. Because you need an extra dose of imposition.

Leave me alone

Have I imposed sufficiently on you yet? If not I intend to keep at it. It is my nature.

Chevy,

The Baptist/bootlegger coalition is well know. The Baptists get to feel superior and the bootleggers get the business. And morality is served all around. The Baptists glory in striking the Devil and the Devil glories by pocketing the cash.

Which is the irony of ironies. In some cases the harder you fight the Devil the stronger the Devil gets. And how do the Baptists do that? By increasing the wages of sin.

So smug in their "Goodness". So in league with the Devil.

I may have understated the case in describing you as a reluctant rabbi. You seem pretty fired-up and eager.

What shall we do with those in league with the Devil, hmmm?
