Several changes are needed to our so-called criminal justice system:
1. Repeal drug prohibition laws and vice laws in general. Behaviors that aren’t criminal shouldn’t be crimes.
2. Implement stricter laws and guidelines regarding dynamic entries for search and arrest warrants and the use of SWAT teams.
3. Outlaw public employee unions including police and firefighter unions.
4. Raise the bar for the use of deadly force. Current standards have eroded to the point that LEO’s are emboldened to escalate to violence when it clearly isn’t warranted.
5. Change LEO culture so that they understand they are public safety officers and their job is to promote the general welfare, not escalate situations so that an arrest can be made.
6. Change LEO culture so that job one is serving the community and not merely getting through their shift safely.
7. Restructure traffic laws with an emphasis on issuing warning tickets, especially in low income neighborhoods.
8. Teach LEO’s how to recognize and deal with citizens experiencing physical or mental health issues.
9. Teach LEO’s how to handle dogs.
10. Repeal laws passed as sentence enhancements as they are used primarily as bargaining chips in plea negotiations.
11. Restructure plea bargaining so that it isn’t used to blackmail defendants into plea deals and away from a trial.
12. End qualified immunity for LEO’s, prosecutors, and other criminal justice officials.
That is my wish list, although I’m probably omitting something.
