Libertarian Christian

Libertarian Christian chimes in on the moral bankruptcy of Christians these days. (I’m not the only one) And he does it from a point of view similar to mine. Which says to me that despite what some commenters think I’m not inherently anti-Christian. I’m against the misapplication of Christian morality.

I keep growing in my dislike for social “conservatives” because, basically, they are complete and total statists. Oh yes, they say they want limited, small government, low taxes – except when it comes to enforcing their social values at the point of a gun and to making sure the military has unlimited expense accounts to police the world and blow up countries they find nominally offensive.

Even as a theologically conservative Christian, I cannot stand being associated with the socially “conservative” philosophy overall. If I had to label it, I’d say I am socially Biblical, not conservative. Even though God’s theocracy/monarchy in Israel had civil laws that we do not, nowhere in Scripture are we called as Christians to make the State make people moral.

As I said in the comments at his place. The Christians on the Republican side seem to forget the admonition: “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

But think about the converse: you’re essentially saying that only people who are morally *perfect* can point out when others are failing. That’s just stupid.

    Tri,

Casting stones – putting people in jail – attacking them with SWAT teams is somewhat different from criticism.

What I’m also saying is that a political Party is not a religion.

    Or perhaps I’m mistaken.

Because if the Republican Party is a religion I’m going to renounce my adherence.

“Because if the Republican Party is a religion I’m going to renounce my adherence.”

In which case you will find yourself SHUNNED.

Moreso with the Democrats, but yeah, the Republicans do it too. As, quite bluntly, do the Libertarians. And the Socialists, Communists, Greens, etc.

And even football/baseball/whatever fans. Seems to me that we humans like to make religions of almost everything.

I kinda live in a border town. Wisconsin/Illinois. The GreenBay types that inhabit the area are reviled. Except when they get to the playoffs and the Bears don’t. Then the locals become Packer fans.

I tend to the more objective religions – such as engineering. Places where you can objectively measure differences and decide based on performance.

Quit using “statist” when you mean “fascist”. The words mean different things, and everyone is a statist when the rubber meets the road, but not everyone is a fascist.

    Daniel,

Uh. I was quoting some one. Take it up with him. There is a link.

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

I used to quote that at certain types of Christians a lot. It didn’t work, because they really did believe that they were without sin…(which, in my understanding, is blasphemy). And, um – that was back when I was what they called a “Jesus Freak.”

(Google that phrase + cult and you’ll find a lot.) Needless to say, I’m basically a rationalist and it didn’t take me all that long to flee for my life, despite being a rather gullible teen. But I learned a LOT about fanatics in that year or so.

And it’s (as I said above) not just in religions that fanatics exist. Politics, sports, fashion…whatever. The minute you hear “Mine is the One True Way.” – run.
