Wall Street Is In The News

I have some other news from Wall Street.

After reading Dark Alliance, I started to study the extraordinary moneymaking business that DOJ and agencies like HUD had built in enforcement that really only made sense if in fact the government was entirely complicit in narcotics trafficking and related mortgage and mortgage securities fraud.

If you want to read more about how drug money took down the country you can read Financial Coup d’Etat. If you want the whole story you can start with the table of contents.

Simon, i am not a bot or ibot or whatever. smile. i am a fact checker in Taiwan. The quote re hell is other people at breakfast is wrong, sir. the real quote from the play NO EXIT, i almost wrote NO EXIST, is L’enfer, c’est les autres” which pardon my French means “Hell is other people.” Look it up. I kid you not.

”Correction [on her blog in OZ]: Sartre said ‘hell is other people’ not “hell is other people at breakfast” as was originally reported. Correction thanks to Dan Bloom.”

Carmen Michael is an author and a journalist in Australia. Her book ”Chasing Bohemia” was published in 2007.

After reading this post about “Hui Clos”, savvy Sartre’s existentialist drama from France, and “Hui Clos” really means something like “closed door” and it’s a French legal term of their legal system of juries and judges, I had to laugh and wonder how JPS’s famous line “Hell is other people” morphed into the “at breakfast” add-on, way back in 2003 and is still going strong. A quick google check showed three examples here below:

From Metafilet in 2003: — “Hell is other people at breakfast” — February 20, 2003 6:39 PM ”Caring for Your Introvert” — An amusingly succinct essay about the “habits and needs of a/

From a blog in 2006: — “Hell is other people at breakfast” — This morning my mom was talking on the phone to her sister Kathy. I was sitting nearby at the computer and …

From 2008: — can i get an amen? 😉 i just heard this line from sartre, ”Hell is other people at breakfast,” author of the play no exit, and i love it. my dad was the perfect breakfast companion. we’d …

And from China Daily newspaper 2012 this past week in Beijing even, they reprinted the New York Times quote that Sartre allegedly said “hell is other people at breakfast” –As Sartre said, “Hell is other people at breakfast” Unless your vision of hell is … 03/11/2012 — page 9

I actually LIKE this new fake quote and hope it lives a long life online. It’s an improvement
    on the original, IMHO…

here: see? from ERic: – Overcoming introversion. Is the cure worse than the disease?
    March 8, 2011 – Author: Eric

Jonathan Rauch has post I consider a must-read, titled “Caring for Your Introvert — The habits and needs of a little-understood group.” I admire his courage for admitting to his introversion. (If I am an introvert, I would never admit it! Things like that are best kept it in the closet!) Excerpt: My name is […]

But Dan. You must have me confused with some one else. It is a little known fact, but my name is not Eric. Please update your records.

As I’ve still been unable to overcome my introversion, I am reluctant to admit my name is Eric. But if I must, I guess I will.

(Were I to be confused with Simon, though, I would probably welcome the opportunity to muddy the waters….)

I don’t care what anybody says.

The above, er, discussion (for want of a more accurate word) . . .

    Now THAT’S comedy.

    “Who’s on first?”

filbert, et al, — yes the above discussion is just what i was driving at when this discussion began, and speaking of firsts, i live in Taiwan where Jason Hu is the mayor of my city, former ROC diplomat, fluent in English, about 60, and he often begins his public speeches for visiting Western dignitaries with the Hu’s on First joke, too. Humour travels well, just as faux Sartre quotes do. The HIOPAB quote discussed above in fact appeared on the front page last week of a New York Times weekly edition appearing in Taipei AND Beijing, so now 1.3 billion Chinese go to sleep believing that Sartre said that cute breakfast thing, which Rauch was just making up out of whole cloth.
And if all this is COMEDY, and I agree, THAT is all I was driving at and Eric has answered all my queries now. Ciao! PS: THE NYT will issue a correction on the fake Sartre quote soon. Fingers crossed (at breakfast)! Danny, Tufts 1971, exile in Asia, [1949-2032 timestamp]

Simon et all, guess what: just before the world ends, the HELL IS OTHER PEOPLE AT BREAKFAST brouhaha made the annual TOP TEN list of corrections at the Poynter.org website by Craig Silverman. Also Metofilter headline their annual wrap up of typos and gaffes with the Hell quote too. GOOGLE it. Cheers and see you on the other side….of HELL!
