No Newt would be good Newt!

I am glad to see that one of my worst political fears appears to have been misplaced. If present trends continue, Newt Gingrich will go nowhere. When hard core socon Stacy McCain, liberal David von Drehle of Time, and conservative stalwart John Podhoretz all agree, then I’m thinking maybe I can breathe a sigh of relief.

As McCain noted, conservatives have ample reason not to trust Gingrich:

He is a distinctly slippery politician, whose ideological commitments are not entirely solid and sound. His 2008 global-warming ad with Nancy Pelosi is a case in point…

Another case in point is his affair with an intern when he was going full-tilt against Bill Clinton for the same sort of thing.

As a conservativeish libertarian with libertarianish conservative tendencies, I find much to dislike and little to like about Gingrich politically. Not only does he epitomize big government conservatism, but his drug war stance alone is the absolute worst to be found anywhere on the political spectrum. Plus, there is just something about his personality that plain irritates me.

Fortunately, as Glenn pointed out earlier, Newt was upstaged by Herman Cain at what was supposed to be “his first speech as a presidential candidate before thousands of state GOP delegates” in his own state.

He could do his own party a favor by quitting the race.

I would find something nice to say about him if he did.

Kind of has a nice ring to it.  Better than being newtral.

And I’ll second on the “no Huckster” – he had a chance, Newt, not so much.

As Eric noted, even the independents don’t like him – and the conservatives hate his guts.

The GOP are the ones that worry me. But they’ll go for Romney, now that Huckster is out of the race. It’s his “turn,” after all. Let’s just HOPE we can change the GOP’s opinion on that.

But, I’ve said this elsewhere, and I’m going to say it here again.

We don’t NEED the presidency – we could elect Mao Tse Tung to the presidency safely if we have the House and Senate. We NEED to control House and Senate. GO LOCAL!

If we go local, our ‘present’ President is a gelding. If we elect “Mr. Perfect” and don’t get back the Senate (and keep the House), we are up the well-known creek without the well-known paddle.

Kathy, I’d like to think you were correct – but presidential decrees, recess appointments, and general ignoring of applicable laws by this administration put the lie to your statements.

Who is there to restrain the administration? Who will bell the cat?

Oh, and BTW, from a 20+ year Georgian – no Newt. Never. He once was good – but he has feet of clay, and chummy with Pelosi? Glowbull Warmening? Bye, Newt…
