Samizdata has a bit up on flying in old aircraft. War birds and commercial jobs. Here is a bit I added to the discussion:
Way back in the dark ages (early 60s) I got to fly in a DC-3 that was carrying passengers. It was an experience.
Conversation in the cabin was hopeless in flight.
The only reason screaming kids are a problem these days is that aircraft are so quiet. We didn’t know how good we had it.

I rather fancy myself a cowgirl, Simon. I learned a long time ago how to drown out ‘noise’ without a six-shooter, an engineer or a bigger, shinier thing.
God made men and women. Samuel Colt made them equal. So how are you with a pistol at twenty meters my cowgirl friend? Me? My bullets generally go down range. Most targets are in no immediate danger.
And the engineer gave you the the bigger shinier and quieter aircraft.
BTW screaming kids on aircraft never bothered me either.
I’ve flown on DC-3s a number of times. Would gladly do so again. In the ones I rode in, there were big comfy overstuffed chairs and square windows to watch the (not so far below) scenery slowly recede into the distance. Carried your own luggage on board and heaved it into a bin that looked just like a bus luggage compartment.
I’ve flew on the Tin Goose (Ford Trimotor) a few years back, what a racket those radial engines made. I loved it!
