In any case I don’t think we should pledging to the flag. We should be pledging to the Constitution, like people who become naturalized, like people who join the military, like people who take an oath of office. It is not the flag that makes us Americans. It is the Constitution.

You know, that’s a real thought… we SHOULD be pledging allegiance to our Constitution rather than our flag (and I say that as someone who loves our flag). Perhaps it’s time for a new pledge, one that negates the whole “Under God” controversy. Perhaps if people pledged their loyalty to the Constitution regularly, they might be more reluctant to figuratively shred it on a daily basis. I think I’ll start a website…
