Today is Veterans Day, and while it has a long history, the important thing is to remember and honor those who served.
My dad was a World War II veteran, as were many of his friends, but unfortunately there are fewer and fewer of them around to thank.
My co-blogger is a veteran, however, and he is very much around.
So thank you, M. Simon.
And that goes for all other veterans.

The best way to honor veterans is don’t make anymore. We have enough graves to put flowers on, on memorial day no more.
Yesterday I called my dad – a D-Day vet – and thanked him for his service. He turned 90-years-old last month. He and my mom still live in the house I grew up in.
I am a fortunate guy.
A French historian wrote: “In the summer of 1914, a man nobody ever heard of shot another man nobody ever heard of in a place that nobody had ever heard of or locate on a map, and as a result, within a month, the whole world was at war and 20 million people were killed.” I read that 50 years ago. I can’t remember the name of the historian who wrote that. I wish I could. It’s a profound line.
Went out with the First Mate to one of the free meal places for vets. Met a ‘Nam Vet there. We exchanged War Stories. That time is now history.
Thanks dad and various uncles. And RIP as needed.
