I can think of a lot of arguments against gay marriage, but a new one emerged today.
In a horrifying shocker of a news item, Georgia’s GOP Chair has warned that heterosexuals might take advantage of same sex marriage if it is legalized!
A top Republican in Georgia has sounded an ominous warning that legalization of same-sex marriage may also lead to fraud.
Sue Everhart, chairwoman of the Georgia Republican Party, told the Marietta Daily Journal in a story published Saturday that once gay nuptials are legally permitted, there will be nothing to stop a straight person from exploiting the system in order to claim marital benefits.
“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” Everhart said. “Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”
Isn’t Ms. Everhart forgetting something? As things stand now, there is absolutely nothing to stop gays from marrying opposite sex partners to claim benefits.
Let’s change her language around:
You may be as gay as they come, and you may have a friend that is also as gay as they come. Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re straight, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal.
As long as they are of the opposite sex, this is done all the time, because no one asks couples about their sexuality. It is not a requirement for a marriage license. Right now, a man and a woman do not have to “say they’re straight” nor would two men or two women have to “say they’re gay.” Asking such questions would pose legal problems, as there is no obligation to demonstrate sexuality or even love in order to marry. The government allows sexless and loveless marriages, and it always will.
I can’t prove it, but I suspect that even if same sex marriage were legalized, there would be more sham opposite sex marriages than sham same sex marriages.

There is more sham everything involving heterosexuals, simply because there are so many more heterosexuals.
This is why it never made any sense to keep gays from getting married using how badly straights have screwed the institution up as an excuse.
95% of the population can’t keep its pants on, and can’t keep its most sacred promises, but — hey — let’s keep gays from being able to have even civil unions, and that will save the family!
Yeah, that’s really worked out well.
I keep going back to Limbaugh’s male lesbian routine: A woman who is trapped in a man’s body who likes other women. All you have to do is make the claim and all doors are opened. Maximize the contradictions. Cheers –
Hmmm…
Lends new meaning to the term “perverse incentive”.
Now, what would happen if we had a system of low, fair taxes with no special discounts for anyone, married or otherwise?
Nawww. Can’t do that. Let’s just noise up the tax code with another few thousand pages of special exemptions on top of a basically unworkable and insane policy.
I mean, what else would politicians do for a living?
