Criminal Justice Petition: Give Texas Prisoners Three Meals a Day | Change.org
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which oversees prisons in Texas, had a mandate to cut costs. So it decided that prisoners would only receive two meals a day on weekends. The first meal is called “brunch” — served between 5 and 7 a.m. Dinner can come up to 13 hours later.
There’s a Texas state law that mandates that prisoners receive three meals in a 24-hour period, but that law only applies to county prisoners, not state prisoners. So 23,000 prisoners in 36 prisons across the state are now stuck with only two meals a day on weekends.
One of those prisoners is Destiny Bowser’s father. Destiny says the lack of food is making her dad sick: “He is currently taking treatments to keep his liver healthy and keep him alive and a side effect of the medication is that he will lose weight. Now that he is not receiving enough food to eat it is impossible for him to stay healthy.”
That’s why Destiny started a petition on Change.org demanding that the Texas Department of Criminal Justice serve all prisoners three meals a day, seven days a week. Please sign her petition right now.
Susan Fenner, executive director of the Texas Inmate Families Association, told the New York Times that these cuts take an emotional toll on prisoners. She said, “One inmate told me, for some of them, that’s all they have to look forward to is a meal.”
State budgets are tight across America, but Texas has no right to exploit a legal loophole to deny food to prisoners. Officials at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice need to know that their actions are being watched and that this violation of prisoners’ rights is completely unacceptable.

We sure have a lot of Christians in America. And it shows.
I am not just doing this for my father and alot of people are not there for mugging old ladies. I’m doing this to save lives. Do you know by cutting food how many lives are put at stake for people who have families to support them. Anyone of us free citizens would fight to the death of us if someone took away what we needed to survive. Just because they are in prison it does not make them the bottom of the barrel they are still human beings and American Citizens and deserve to be treated as such. What would you do if it was you or your father?
