Whose Voices Are You Listening To?

An essay on eating disorders that has a lot to say about human nature. We are slaves to what other people want. We NEED our group. In the old days ( a few years ago ) we handled this with role models. I haven’t seen anyone I’d care to emulate since Robert Pease died. Or Bucky Fuller.

This excerpt from the essay makes the point.

As long as we are not provided with a goal worthy of our emptiness we will copy the emptiness of others and constantly regenerate the hell from which we are trying to escape.

The author of the essay goes deeply into why people fast. In Seven Pillars of Wisdom T. E. Lawrence makes a point of mentioning all the fasting people in the desert do. He also notes that this desert region has been the origin of at least 40,000 religions. Three of which made it.

And of course Julius Cesar.

CAESAR

Let me have men about me that are fat,
Sleek-headed men and such as sleep a-nights.
Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look.
He thinks too much. Such men are dangerous.

I should add that understanding this mimetic desire made Facebook very rich.
