A new public menace! (As seen in a viral video!)

The unchanging conservative position on the war on drugs was recently restated in a Washington Examiner editorial:

A slew of viral videos in recent weeks reveal the devastating effects of America’s drug abuse epidemic.

[…]

Even as polls suggest public attitudes toward drug use is becoming more lax, the recent viral videos remind us of why drugs are illegal. They destroy lives and devastate communities. They should be treated as the public menace that they are.

The argument is identical to that of the Hearst/Anslinger era.

Drugs hurt people! So let’s put people in prison!

To those who think the threat of prison will do anything more than raise prices and create new economic opportunities, all arguments are a waste of time. The drug warriors demanded — and got — a crackdown on opiates, and now that it’s clear that the crackdown only made the problem worse (creating new markets for black market drugs heroin and fentanyl), they demand ever more laws and an ever bigger crackdown.

Why?

Because viral video, that’s why!

As more people talk openly about their experiences with the opiate mafia (legal and illegal) the war will get canceled.
