The Real Minimum Wage Is….

Wendy’s fast food has seen the future. And it doesn’t cost $15 an hour.

Wendy’s fast food restaurant chain says it will begin offering self-serve kiosks at its 6,000-plus locations across America, making them available to costumers by the end of 2016.

The fast food giant’s decision to move toward automation comes just as “Fight for $15”–a progressive protest movement, pushing minimum wage hikes–is applying pressure on state governments to raise wages for low-skilled fast food workers.

Last August, Wendy’s CFO Todd Penegor told investors that mandated wage hikes will cause his company to pursue other innovative avenues that could lead to fewer jobs for low-skill workers.

The real minimum wage is zero.

Back in the early 80s Burger King was funding robotics research on the theory that if labor became too expensive they could automate the cooking and burger assembly operations and concentrate on customer service with expensive humans.

The modern approach seems to be the opposite, automate the user interface (text a burger tm) and use the expensive human labor for burger assembly. Probably makes more sense, kiosk and shopping basket software is commonplace, meanwhile burger assembly takes flexibility and a good bit of manual dexterity, something humans can do rather well.

I predict fast food will trend towards a more made to order model as labor expenses increase and automation improves. Which already seems to be a trend. Current examples might be Jersey Mike’s Subs, Panera, Qdoba vs King Wendy McBurgerbox. Trending towards more complicated and labor intensive food while taking orders through smart phone apps, txt etc.

If you have to pay someone $15 just to build a burger, might as well get some workers who are actually worth $15 and put them to work doing something that needs a little more flexibility and attention to detail. Or this:

    Cap,

Read any good polls lately? Trump is doing better among Hispanics than Hillary.

    “ignorant southern white trash”

Captain, would it be fair then to characterize Mexican and Central American immigrants as “ignorant southern brown trash”? And since those people are taking lower-end jobs from blacks, and the southern states have the highest percentage of blacks, would it be fair to characterize those blacks as “ignorant southern black trash”?

Maybe Trump will create an Equal Trash Opportunity Commission to make sure that No Trash Gets Left Behind.

“…causing rise of trump temporary and sanders permanent” – as I said… dream on. I’m not saying Trump will win, though, considering the alternative, I hope he will. the alternative is not Sanders, it’s Hillary. Sanders hasn’t a chance against the Clinton machine. Trump…might.
