Ever notice how many States have State religions? I wonder why that is?
I had always thought that religion was between a man and God. No State required.
In this modern era things have broken down here in the good old USA. Parties now have their religions. And in some cases the Party is the religion.

In the earliest civilizations the religion was the state. In Egypt the pharaoh was a god, the state existed to serve him. In Mesopotamia the ziggurat was the center of the city, where the priests went to the peak to hear the wishes of the gods.
In any case, the organization is god at the top, priests in between and a vast hoard of agricultural peons below.
