Ignorance of science is not a “classical value”.
Well, it might be. There was a commonly promoted “truth” decades ago that their was no proof cigarettes hurt your health.
The logic was that since granny smoked and lived til 90, therefore… (just ignore all the statistical evidence).
The climate change denial takes the exact same approach. Earth is getting warmer, the statistics from every nation show it. But “hey – it snowed a lot – it can’t be warmer” is the new logic. It is just the same as anecdotal granny.
I do believe you are likely sincere in your desire for actual classical values. There is no logical reason why science should be part of a “culture war”.
@Keith, ignore the doctored statistics and assume the consensus is correct that the earth is getting warmer. I’ll buy it, despite the increasing ice sheet in the Antarctic, the apparent reversal of the melting Polar ice cap, and the stall in world temperature increases the last 20 years or so. You and the overwhelming body of evidence are probably right. What I won’t buy is the connection to man-made carbon emissions as the cause. When so-called climate scientists can fully explain the cycle of ice ages going back millions of years and exclude these natural phenomena as the cause, then and only then will their theories hold water. Until that time it is nothing more than a belief based on the religion of environmentalism.
I love the smell of unfalsifiable hypotheses in the morning.

10 years ago today Al Gore predicted we had exactly 10 years to save the Earth from global warming. Nothing we can do about it now. It’s too late for us, we’re all DOOMED! DOOMED I tells ya! DOOMED! Time to give up, cash out the life savings and have one massive final blow out of a Saturnalia while waiting for the inevitable end.
EVERYTHING is the fault of global warming. Including any impending ice ages. And no, not worrying about that either. The hysterics were on about that in the 70’s.

It’s all about money and power. $20+ billion per year is a huge incentive to keep voters whipped up in an end time fervor. What’s not to like? Federal bureaucrats get plum positions for life, university professors get massive funding, and politicians get to hand out favors in exchange for campaign contributions.

I think that the global warming hysterics don’t have any qualms about scaring the shit out of children for their own gain. Check out these predictions of imminent doom from 1970. Example:

It’s the same shit the global warming hysterics are handing out now. How many kids today make really bad choices because they’re been brainwashed into thinking that the world will cease to exist before they get to middle age? Global warming hysteria is child abuse. And every year the the RSS observed temps continue to stay far below the modeled temps, the hysterics have to double down on the hysteria to maintain their funding.
Chocolatier, your 7th grader probably watched An Inconvenient Truth and professes to believe it. In the 8th grade the nuns had us watch a little piece of French made horror about alcoholism that included graphic pictures of deformed children and aborted fetuses. At the same time we couldn’t help but laugh at the hypocrisy of Msgr. O’Connor and Mother Superior who were always tipsy after Vespers, just as I imagine your 7th graders are wise to Al Gore’s carbon footprint.
In future years the millennials and their grandchildren will have a good time mocking films like Inconvenient Truth & The Hunting Ground as our generation mocks Reefer Madness.

OK, the money has a lot to do with gorbal worming hysteria, but why this in particular, instead of great steaming gobs of money for cold fusion, reactionless drive or advanced weapons systems, or something else that might actually yield useful results? Because the “solutions” to the imaginary problem are aligned with the luddites and suckolists goals of massive destruction of wealth and the industrial base, loss of freedom and totalitarian government.
