Soft Targets

So many times on the “news” about terrorist attacks in the last few days I have heard about “soft targets” with zero irony. If more people in the general population were carrying there would be no soft targets.

Except for “gun free zones.”

    craptain,

You will note that the NRA is an expression of the popular will. America has had a strong gun culture for 300 years at least.

The NRA is an expression of that not the cause. You might as well blame FOX News for right wing opinion. OH? You do? Never mind.

I was in my insurance agent’s office after the attack in Paris. I shared that when I went into a store, or restaurant, that when I saw six or eight people in there with me, I pretty much knew half of us were carrying.

It makes you feel pretty safe.

As far as I know, big concert venues, even in free states are gunfree zones. I was wanded at the last one I went to. One reason I rarely go to those things.

It’s interesting that Brazil is looking to go more towards the U.S. in regards to firearms ownership by citizens.

Meanwhile, as I understand it, the EU just stated that they’ll call for a ban on all semi-military style automatic “assault rifles”.

    One step forward, three back.

At least here in the US, concealed carry is spreading, open carry is spreading, guns sales are up and up, more and more women are buying and owning guns and shooting, and Constitutional Carry is gaining ground in more states.

Sure, as Bram noted: concert venues are generally gun free zones. More reason to avoid concerts.

Besides, the vast majority of the groups performing are comprised of Those Who Are No Longer Our Countrymen – so why support them with our money? Starve the beast… and make sure you let them know by mail why you’re no longer patronizing their performing venues. (Most bands get the bulk of their income from the concept circuit. Vote with your wallet, and hit them in theirs.)

Europeans are going to have to make their own choices in this matter.

“The NRA is an expression of that not the cause. You might as well blame FOX News for right wing opinion. OH? You do? Never mind.”

    I blame Breitbart, myself.

What? (o0) Why are you looking at me like that? I do!

    Snerk. 🙂

While I at least thought that the “craptain” snark was funny, Simon… never feed the modem rodents. It just causes them to breed.

Why are you in favor of French women being gang raped by muslims, captain? Some weird fetish of yours? Do you like to watch, perhaps?

It’s not NRA members but gang bangers, criminals, and democrats (as seen by the California democrat who was gun running while attempting to enforce more restrictive gun control and the KKK) who do the killings. I assume, captain, that you are a democrat, or is it commiecrat. Or do you deny it and call yourself, like Mitch in Issaquah, a liberal progressive because communist has too much bad press.

    @captain*az:

Gun control laws in the US were originally promoted by the Democrats post civil war to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. Why do you hate black people, captain?

    @TheAJ:

With the good captain@az, AJ, the other posters here are attempting to argue in good faith using reason with someone who didn’t start out in good faith or from a position of reason. No point in arguing from reason with the unreasonable. He’s not interested in reason, data, numbers, or reality, and he demonstrates it with every post. Turning the rhetoric back on him in kind is the only worthwhile response.

Guns in the hands of women are the best rape preventative in existence. Captain@az doesn’t want women to have guns. Captain@az must hate women and like seeing them raped.

It follows directly from his pseudo logic and pseudo dialectics.

Black on black violence is the most common form of “gun violence” in the US. Gun control laws were originally designed to keep post reconstruction blacks from owning guns to protect themselves against the (Democrat) lynchings. Therefore captain@az must like black on black violence and favor seeing blacks murdered.

Maybe the good captain has a white sheet and hood fetish. It follows directly from his rhetoric.

But don’t worry – the train is fine.

    Captain, I have the answer:

If you break them down by race*, the firearm homicide rate for whites is about the same as the Scandinavian countries, which are all very, very white countries. You really have to compare the large, racially diverse US to another large, racially diverse country. The only one that comes to mind is Brazil, and its gun death rate is double that of the US.

Sorry, Cap’n, that was uncalled for. I find this to be a very interesting subject and sometimes I get carried away.

Anyway, does it matter which device is used for homicide? That is, isn’t a person just as dead after being beaten to death with a baseball bat vs. a gun? I don’t think so, so let’s look at homicide rates. From Wikipedia (per 100,000 population):

    France: 1.0
    United States: 3.8

At first glance, we’re a murderous bunch. But wait! France is more than just the EU country. It’s got colonies!

Saint Pierre and Miquelon (near Canada): 16.5
    Mayotte (eastern Africa): 6.0
    Guadeloupe (Caribbean): 7.9

But wait! The US has individual states! From Audacious Epigone (also per 100K):

    New Hampshire: 0.9
    Minnesota: 0.9
    District of Columbia: 12.4
    Nevada: 6.6

It just goes to show you…something.

    Captain,

Try Gun deaths in US vs Jamaica – which has some pretty draconian gun laws. Just for fun. Or a number of other countries… feel free to google gun laws for them, too.
    Nice little chart here
