Done Deal?

America has made a deal with a country that hosts “Death To America” rallies. What could possibly go wrong?

Well that country is not entirely happy with the deal.

Kermani said Iran would accept a deal only if sanctions were lifted immediately, frozen revenues were returned and Tehran’s revolutionary ideals, including its fight with “global arrogance” – a term for the West and Israel — were preserved.

Well, the lifting of sanctions will assist Iran in the fight against “global arrogance”. No doubt a good time will be had by all. Except for the “globally arrogant”.

I’m not sure what the Supreme Leader (Iran – to distinguish him from our own Supreme Leader) has to bitch about. Just look at what Bill Clinton’s similar arrangement did for NoKo Supreme Leader Kim Jung Pud.

From a completely cynical geopolitical view, wouldn’t it be advantageous to the West if the entire middle east became a giant glowing crater? Any remaining moslems who object will be offered a chance to be sent back where they came from. And in 50 years we can drill through the green glass and recover the oil. There’s plenty to go around until then elsewhere.

    cap,

No need. The Saudis have decided to intensify their proxy war with Iran because of the deal. Good times.

Obama is our most brilliant foreign policy President ever. He will get a very large section in the history books.

“He will get a very large section in the history books.”
    Indeed, I’m afraid he will.

@Man Mountain – I’m afraid that “solution” would also take out Israel. I’d rather not.

Simon, this is so depressing. Shades of Chamberlain etc. The vision that comes to mind is Masada.

    Frank,

At least Chamberlain was aware that war was very likely and was buying time. Britain was re-arming.

For the life of me I can’t see the purpose of this deal except creating a very large war in the ME.

Well, there is the (very cynical) point that if they are busy killing each other off, they MIGHT leave the rest of us alone for a while. Not that I think it will work…but I suppose it’s worth a try?

Lol, I can see the glass em all mullahs are too stupid to even apply Occam’s Razor.

If both Mullahs in America (like Kathy “The only reason I opposeddestroying all the Muslims is because the jews will suffer”Kinsley and Mountain “lets glass everybody in the Middle East, especially the kids” and the Mullahs of Iran hate this deal, its probably a pretty strong one.

    LOVE IT.

It is such a good deal that the Saudis are amping up their war with Iran in response.

But no matter. He just has to convince 2/3rds of the Senate it is a good deal.

Simon, the Yahoo article focuses on Saudi outreach to Russia & China as well as Iran’s proxy wars. It appears that Obama has pushed them into the arms of Iran’s current supporters. In the long run this spells disaster for the west.

A question: which is the stronger bond, the fading alliance that Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States have with the west, or the basic tenets of Islam they have in common with Shia muslims? Wasn’t WW2 started by an alliance of Communists and Fascists with their joint attack on Poland? Didn’t we form an alliance later with Soviet Russia to defeat a common enemy?

The Iran deal is a disaster if for no other reason than we are abandoning allies to court favor with a known enemy. Israel may never me an enemy, but Saudi Arabia now sees us as one. Bad move on Obama’s part.

How about no deals? Just a consistent Don’t Fuck With The Eagle policy.

    Frank,

Islam is more consonant with imperial rule and “the party in power” than it is with Democracy.

How they ever got hooked with us….

Before fracking the Saudis were important. Their time is past.

At current prices for oil – Saudi Arabia is burning massive amounts of capital.

And for Iran things are worse.

The Saudis can keep up the burn rate for 2 1/2 years.

The Saudis break even socially at about $70 a bbl. Iran’s number is $120 a bbl.

I don’t see how war can be avoided.

As Jerry Pournelle says, instead of Gulf Wars 1 and 2 we should have developed domestic energy supplies and told the Arabs (and Persians) to drink their oil.

Oil money funds a lot of mischief around the world. For example, the Saudis get to build a vast network of Wahabist mosques world wide.

Cutting their funding makes a lot more sense than expensive wars and random drone attacks. I think the US needs a much better understanding about how economic warfare might work. Along with cyber warfare.
