The first priority of the Republican Congress appears to be the vaginas of American women.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Republicans kicked off their first day in control of the US Congress this week by moving to ban all abortions after 20 weeks, first in the House and very soon in the Senate. The House already passed this back in 2013 – with exactly zero exceptions for women’s health, or rape or incest that hadn’t been reported to police.
So are we going to get another Federal Agency out of this? The PEA? The Pregnancy Enforcement Administration? And will the brains of this organization be called PEA brains?
Well it will require enforcers. And heaven knows we don’t have near enough of those. Nice to know they want to add vagina inspectors to the list.
I’m interested though in finding out where in the Constitution Congress got the power over vaginas? Would that be the Infinite Commerce Clause? Or something else? Well what ever it is it is not limited government.
And correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t recall abortion being an issue in the 2014 election. I thought Obamacare was the issue. Leave it to Republicans to make their social issues the top of the agenda.
And yes. I know a very large number of Americans oppose abortion. And a very large number want the government to stay out of it.
I’m still hoping they will do something Constitutional for a change. Like passing a Prohibition Amendment. It would still need to be OKed by the President and ratified. But it would be a start.
Ijits.
I have covered the subject in the past.
The Jewish Position On Abortion
The Jews And Partial Birth Abortion
The Penalty For Abortion Should Be
Given that the Jews believe the life of the mother is the most important value, I think the Republicans have lost the Jewish vote with this one.

Update:
Scenario – A policeman pulls over a woman. He claims she crossed the yellow line. He cites a law that criminalizes abortion and tells her he needs to inspect her vagina. The woman demures, “It is a Federal Law”. The officer ignores her and orders her out of the vehicle and then orders her to raise her skirt and drop her drawers so he can palpitate the organ in question. Does she have any recourse? No. The Supreme Court has ruled that even if the officer gets the law wrong searches are legal.
Is this a wonderful country or not?

The grand old stupid party strikes again. Coming up next: a flag burning amendment and school prayer.
A government is an entity with the legitimate power of life and death over its subjects. That means, in our society, pregnant women are governments. In the name of limited government…
I’ve heard just about that argument in favor of abortion from Libertarians. The fetus is like an uninvited guest, it is subject to eviction if it displeases the host.
Personally, I think humans have rights even if they haven’t been born yet. Exact definition of “human” subject to debate.
A monumental waste time and of political capital by the elephants.
Even if they get it out of Congress, Obama will veto it. And I doubt they have the votes to override a presidential veto. And even if they could override a veto, the law would be challenged in court and likely struck down at the district, appellate and USSC levels.
With that said, in a sense it is a huge step in the right direction for the Repubs regarding their views on the issue. They are ceding a great deal of ground in this bill by leaving early term abortions alone. Omitting safe harbors after 20 weeks is still a weakness though.
But it doesn’t really matter. Until Roe v. Wade is addressed via an amendment giving Congress or the states legislative power over abortions compromise bills like this are doomed in the courts IMO. Even if a compromise bill like this from the Repubs would pass, the R v. W decision still stands in the way.
Joseph and MMM,
The argument is in fact religious and all religions don’t agree.
Read my articles on abortions and the Jews. Short version – the life and MENTAL HEALTH of the mother are primary. Second – it is not a human until half the head or in case of a breech birth half the body exits the mother.
In fact current law comports with the Jewish interpretation which is the least restrictive of all the major religions.

In any case this subject re: Congress is making the rounds among Democrats and they will use it to rally the troops.
And beyond all that the Federal government used to have no involvement in medicine because it was thought that it didn’t have the power. That was the argument by Republicans against the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914.
So much for traditional values eh? So much for Constitutional Government eh?
What the Republicans are doing is in effect ratifying the power of the Feds to do things like the ACA.
Stupid f*cks.
[…] may recall that the top Republican Congress Priority was getting a Federal abortion bill […]
