The inexcusable violence of trigger warnings

While waiting at a traffic light the other day, I saw a bumper sticker which challenged my sense of logic:

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!

Because I like to understand things, I was immediately confused.

What does that slogan mean? The more I wondered, the more confused I became. I mean, from a pacifist standpoint, one could argue that there is no excuse for violence period. But to single out women implies that maybe violence against men might be excusable, right?

And what about violence in self defense? Suppose a woman is a violent attacker? Many women have engaged in violent attacks. Would it not be justifiable for the victim of such attacks (whether female or male) to use violence in self defense?

Or is the meaning of the statement in the bumper sticker limited by the use of the plural? Might it be that violence against an individual woman might be excusable, but violence against more than one woman  is not?

I’m confused.

And if we look at the definition of the key word — violence — my confusion becomes unbearable:

The World Health Organization defines violence as “the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation”, but acknowledges that the inclusion of “the use of power” in its definition expands on the conventional meaning of the word.

I’ll say. (For starters, there is no excuse for using force to make women pay taxes!) And if the use of “power” is included, the amount of women affected is huge:

power is the ability to influence or control the behavior of people. The term authority is often used for power perceived as legitimate by the social structure.

Do not many women have that same power? And if they use that power to tell other women what to do, isn’t that also violence against women?

Or can violence against women only be committed by men?
