Belated homage to a man who played the people who run our lives.

Earlier I thought I recognized a very familiar character actor in the 1933 film, Goldiggers of 1933. Trouble is, he was so young I wasn’t 100% sure, but I had seen him in so many things that even though I didn’t know his name I knew I could find him by Googling. Sure enough, looking for the sour bureaucrat who appeared in countless I Love Lucy, and The Beverly Hillbillies episodes soon revealed the man’s name: Charles Lane. He was typecast as a government bureaucrat or other villainous busybody authority figure and lived to the ripe old age of 102. That surprised me, as I assumed he would have been dead for years.

I’m also a bit annoyed that I didn’t notice his death. So, I thought “what on earth was I blogging about that day”?

Government bureaucrats, that’s what!

Anyone who has dealt with what we call “bureaucrats” knows that one of the most important things to a bureaucrat is having a form filled out correctly. Getting the forms right is the traditional sine qua non of bureaucracy.

The thesis of my post was that the bureaucratic need to account for and monitor everyone would naturally make them hate illegal aliens and want them all registered and numbered. In the system, damn it!

I think Charles Lane’s sourpuss character would have understood.

Heh – I checked his credits. That’s one heckuva credits list. (And, yes, I did recognize the face.)

    May he rest in peace.

Never knew his name, but instantly recognized him. Must have seen him in 100 shows. RIP.
