We Are The New Slaves

“We are the new slaves” some one was complaining in a comment thread discussing the latest attack by the DOJ on George Zimmerman.

Well, I HAD to respond:

We were always the slaves of some one. What is different is that you more or less liked your old masters. The new masters are intolerable – to you. But other people like them.

I have thought for a long time that the answer was the smallest government possible in order to limit the mischief. I espoused that for decades. Unfortunately I couldn’t get enough of my fellow citizens “satisfied with their masters” to join me.

They always wanted something. Prohibition of this or that. A hand out. A job. A government contract. Something.

You have asked for Masters and now you object to being slaves? Cry me a river.

    Positively Talmudic. 1 Samuel 8, 18.

“When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

Ha! A friend and I were just discussing something similar on the phone. My conclusion was there really is only one fix, the exact one you’ve outlined – a smaller central government to limit the mischief made possible to so much power. Like your experience, only a few seem to agree with me.

When a government expands outside its proper bounds and comes to encompass and invade almost every aspect of people’s lives injustice reigns. Every thing is politicized and in becoming politicized life really does become a zero-sum game. People come to believe, with ample reason, that each election is a do or die for them personally. Why then does everyone seem puzzled by the anger and rancor dominating our national political discussion? It makes perfect sense to me. I know I’m pretty angry about it all.
