You know the world is kinda messed up when…

A comment to a Youtube video of Groucho Marx on “What’s My Line?”

You know the world is kinda messed up when you find peace of mind in comedy shows from 1950 and they are infinite times better than anything you can find either on tv or anywhere else today. :/ I’m 26 and it’s been about 5 years I can’t stand how idiotic everyone and everything has become… We applaud stupidity.

We also applaud insincerity.

Back in the 50s, we had a bald-headed president who was so plain spoken that he probably couldn’t be elected today.

Here he is, talking about the JFK assassination in 1963:

His obvious integrity and sincerity stand in marked contrast to the polished, nuanced, finger-to-the-wind ruling classes of today.

Interestingly, were he alive today, I think he would understand how an anonymous 26-year-old commenter would have so much more common sense than his, um, betters.

I remember Ike very well, having been in grammar / high school during his administration. And I have read quite about him since.

He just made you feel – secure. Safe.

No president since then – –

But then, none have had nearly his bio.

As for the rest, yes, the old shows may appear dated, but are more fun to watch than the newer ones.

When I was young…. My parents stuck “I like Ike” buttons on me. When I got older, I approved.

@ Charlie – I think you maybe have 7 or 8 years on me… thanks for making me feel young. 🙂

I blame TV for the poor quality of candidates for the presidency. The only people who run for President today are those who want their faces on every TV set on the planet. Who wants people like that running the country?

It seems callow to mention it, but lately I’ve been watching What’s My Line episodes on YouTube. The wit, civility, and intelligence are unmatched by anything on American TV today.

Here Ike did a good job of giving unscripted yet clear and concise replies to questions presented at a difficult time.

Ike had the reputation of at times giving bumbling answers to questions during press conferences. From a remark he made to Press Secretary Jim Hagerty before the first televised Presidential press conference, it would appear that any bumbling Ike did was done quite deliberately.

Don’t worry, Jim; if that question comes up I’ll just confuse them.

    Ike didn’t need a teleprompter.

    Following the link at
A comment to a Youtube video of Groucho Marx on “What’s My Line?”, there is a video on the side of interesting historical perspective. 1956 “I’ve Got a Secret: I was in Ford’s Theater when John Wilkes Booth shoot Abraham Lincoln. He was 5 years old at the time, and 96 years old at the time he appeared on the TV show. Jayne Meadows, who was Steve Allen’s wife, was the panelist who discovered the Secret.
