Jupiter – The Planets – Holst

One of my very favorites. I have been listening to this for over 50 years. It brings back my youth. In spirit anyway. Performance by James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Lovely music – but too fast, too sprightly, too excited. Venus, maybe. But Jupiter should be ponderous, thoughtful. Slow and powerful. Not sprightly.

    Sorry.

This is in fact the most ponderous version I could find.

Think of the children dancing around Jupiter who is a father.

    “Daddy, look at me!!!” LOL

Unlike Saturn, where they’d be saying, “Daddy, don’t look at me!” (Warning: disturbing image by Goya at link.)

Saturn is old age. Which does devour children.
