No power!

Along with thousands of others in Ann Arbor, my power is out. Which sucks.

Fortunately, I have a small generator, which will keep the poor fish alive and let me check email. Here’s how it looks, purring along.

It’s an older Honda, not terribly powerful, but pretty reliable. I have a transfer switch so I can flip back and forth between four circuits as needed, without overloading the generator.

The guy who sold it to me four years ago told me that my buying it would guarantee that I would never need it. That was true for four years. Every time I’ve hauled the thing out of the garage and set it up, the power has come back on.

Not this time. DTE has absolutely no information on when power will be restored, and it has been raining in huge sheets most of the day, so the work crews are probably having a tough time of it.

As long as I don’t run out of gas, I should be OK. This is a reminder that in the event of a real crisis, gasoline would for me be the single most important survival tool.

Stock up, baby, stock up. And get one that will run the freezer/fridge until you’ve emptied it.
(Speaking as a hurricane surviver with over a week without electric.) Just imagine if it went off forever…
