How cold can I get?

I hate this f**king weather! Winter is one thing, but there is something about waking up in the morning to see the temperature below zero that just takes whatever remaining wind I have out of my sails. I don’t want to go anywhere or do anything, yet I have to. My bones ache, and so do my joints, my lower back, everything. There is something about coldness that we have not figured out, because even though I have heat, there is more to this than temperature and I don’t know what. Something creeps through despite having a gas furnace heat the house air and it gets to me. I wish I knew what it was, but whatever it is, it didn’t happen in California.

One thing is clear. Not only will my complaining about it not make it go away, it makes it worse. Like freezing it in time. If you don’t like something, and if there is nothing you can do about it, it’s probably better not to complain, but just suffer in silence. After all, this will pass, and Spring will eventually come. But all that Global Warming they keep promising will never happen, at least not in Michigan in my lifetime. It’s just a scold. Perhaps I should be glad that they’re scolding people who are freezing their butts off. It’s a great way to generate cynicism and resentment against the Scolding Classes. Every last one of them should be made to shovel snow in below zero temperatures before riding their bikes to work!

UPDATE: It appears that this blog post has not stopped the ferocious weather.

Wind chill of 15 to 20 below zero expected in southeast Michigan overnight, NWS says

Lovely. I blame those who pooh-pooh the forces of the Ice Age, which I was taught in the early 70s is still with us and headed back for another glaciation.

What if we need to warm the planet, and the carbon footprint people are making it worse?

Eric, FYI it’s been bitterly cold in So Cal, for a month now into the 20s and 30s every night and finally hit 75 yesterday.
I know it’s not Michigan, but The weather is one of the few nice things left in this God forsaken state, I feel ya, I’m freezing right now as I type,

SW Florida’s got a bit of a cold snap too. But I suspect you’d be out in shorts in our 69 degrees.

Move baby, move. You are allowed to defend yourself here too…

I think I see part of your problem: first, you have frost on your windows–you’re losing heat through them–get yourself some low-e double pane windows.

Second, the frost is so sparsely distributed that I’m betting the relative humidity in your house is very low; that will make you feel colder, and may dry your sinuses to the point of making them more susceptible to infection (this seems to be very idiosyncratic, it hurts some people, helps others).

If you can’t go double-glazed (and I wouldn’t in the middle of winter), get yourself some shrink film for the windows and use a humidifier. Best of luck.
