Yanno, there are legal uses for the opium poppy. Seems we could head them off at the pass there by letting them grow legally?
It’s been proposed, and I hope someone has the sanity to back it up. Morphine is a biggie, although it’s less useful for pain relief than heroin, it’s legal (albeit highly restricted) in most countries.
Codeine, yeah, another opiate – VERY widely used/prescribed.
But until they admit that prohibition is the problem, I doubt they’ll set Afghansitan farmers free.
