Did you ever read “Lucifer’s Hammer” (Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle -1977)? There was a surfer in that one too. He didn’t survive but he rode the ultimate tsunami. A skyscraper got in his way…
Don’t quite know why, but your link made me think of that book. (Apocalyptic-SF for those who like such – and I do.)

I didn’t read “Lucifer’s Hammer”.
I loved the part of the video where the guy looks like he wiped out in the pipeline and then the spray clears and he is standing tall. It must have been an amazing ride.
