On Youtube, I found some music from my childhood. I used to watch American Bandstand when I was a kid, and I remember seeing this very song — “Baby Talk” by Jan & Dean:

It would be scary if I took the time to think about it.

This was J&D’s first real hit. Before this, while Dean was off getting Reserve training, Jan recorded a couple of singles with Arnie Ginsburg, one of which – “Jennie Lee” – sounded rather a lot like “Baby Talk,” and even more so when Jan redid it with Dean.
One of the very first things I did when I relocated (briefly) to Los Angeles in the late 1980s was to take a spin down Dead Man’s Curve. They’d taken all the danger/fun out of it by then, though.
The only childhood memory I have of American Bandstand is of seeing it one time at a neighbor’s house. The neighbor’s cousin had been one of the teenage dancers on American Bandstand. I don’t believe it was the time I saw the show, though.
Which reminds me of seeing my LA cousin on Art Linkletter’s House Party. First time I had seen him, on TV several thousand miles away.
Thanks Charles! Baby Talk was a hit in ’59, but I am not 100% sure that the Dick Clark appearance would necessarily have been in 1959. I remember seeing it, but I cannot remember the year. (In ’59, I was only five years old, so the lyric applied to me!)
