My Internet Service Is Like Windows

It has to be reset/rebooted frequently to make it work reasonably.

Are you having similar problems? Mine began about 4 or 5 weeks ago. I have been in communication with Comcast frequently about the problem. Two truck rolls later (plus one they did on their own for line/POP server maintenance) and still no resolution.

I have heard rumors that the network is under attack. Nothing confirmed so far.

Update: 27 June 2012 1410z

My uptime is running 12 hours or less. I ping test my external IP and can watch the service degrade by the hour.

Yes. I’m on Time Warner cable and I have the same problem. So far I just power cycle the cable modem and the router and things get better for various lengths of time. Always at least a day, often many weeks. Symptoms range from slow down, to inability to locate well known websites, to totally dead. It’s been going on (and off) for four-five years now, ever since I got cable put in. Over this space of time the cable people replaced their modem, and I replaced the router.
It may be that the code in either the router or the modem has a memory leak, and over time they run out of pool memory. Power cycling reclaims all pool memory and if the leak is small, or only happens under unusual circumstances, things can run OK for months before you need to power cycle things again.
It hasn’t happened since I replaced the router a couple of months ago, but I don’t really think it’s fixed for good.

My router has to be rebooted AT LEAST once a week, and it seems to be more often lately. Very, very annoying. Only I don’t have Comcast; I have DSL.

My uptime is running 12 hours or less. I’d be very happy with with two days of uninterrupted service. A week? Nirvana.

I do a ping test to my external IP and I can watch the service go down. By the hour.

Last two or three weeks I’ve had to do the unplug the modem/router-wait awhile-plug ’em back in routing several times a day. I thought Big Sis had discovered my access point is named “Google Larry Sinclair” and decided to make an example out of me…..

    Buck,

Yeah. I have had a bunch of paranoid fantasies running through my mind from the experience too.

I had a similar problem for years. Comcast kept coming out changing various things from cabling to the modem, etc.

One problem was identified when I commented that the problem seems to happen later in the day (after the sun has been out for a few hours). The Comcast technician did an “aha” and ran out to the box at the curb (we have underground wiring) and replaced the connectors therein. He explained that the connectors were probably loose and expanded after the sun heated up the box, causing a faulty connection. I haven’t had a problem since.

Of course it took over 18 months to find this, but there you go.

My wire is on a pole and the last tech to visit did an end to end (pole to house) wire replacement. The first tech just replaced all the connectors (pole to house).
